As part of the PPS Lift Literacy campaign, schools across the district will host a Read-In on Thursday, April 16th. Here at Hosford, we will support the Read-In through extended independent reading time, similar to what we do each Thursday morning in advisory. Please ask your student about their current independent reading book!

Dear Families,

This week is there is a staff meeting on Tuesday, April 14th. Students will begin school at 9:30 am instead of 9:15 am.

On Friday, April 17th, we'll have our first Disability Pride affinity group. Special thanks to Daisy, our parent volunteer, who has organized this space for our students! The group will meet during the 7th and 8th grade lunch, but 6th graders may join from their 4th period class if they'd like.

In alignment with our Disability Pride affinity group, all students will be thinking about ways to create a more inclusive community at Hosford Middle School during advisory. Student will be learning how to interrupt ableism. They will think about the different needs of each other, and how to show care. Lastly, they will review intent vs. impact, as this is a frequent conversation we have with students.

Have a great week,

Jill Liddle, Principal

Candy Grams Student to Student Candy Grams Student to Student

Student-to-Student candy gram sales start Monday!

Each candy gram is $1 to send to a friend.

Students need to know their friend's first and last name, their advisory teacher, write a kind message, and who it's from.

Students should bring in money to give to leadership students when they turn in their completed cards. Leadership students will attach candy to the cards and deliver them in advisory classes on Friday along with all of the parent-bought cards!

Thank you for supporting our school and spreading the love this spring!

Measles Outbreak Measles Outbreak

April 10, 2026

Dear Families and Staff,

As you may know, there is a measles outbreak in Oregon. Per the Oregon Health Authority, there are 11 reported cases throughout the state. Multnomah County reported its first measles case this year on March 26, 2026. In consultation with our public health partners, the Multnomah Education Service District (MESD) and the Multnomah County Health Department (MCHD), we are recommending steps to prevent illness and outlining action steps should measles impact our school community.

What is measles?

  • Measles is a highly contagious respiratory disease and can have serious complications, including hospitalization and death. Initial symptoms include fever, cough, runny nose, red eyes and sore throat. Typically, a rash develops near the hairline or neck and spreads to the rest of the body.

  • Measles can be especially dangerous for babies and young children but can cause severe disease in people of all ages.

Measles may be prevented through vaccinations. Two doses of the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine are recommended for children (typically given at 12 months of age and 4 years old) and are 97% effective at preventing measles for life. Adolescents and adults without immunity to measles can receive two doses of MMR vaccine 28 days apart.

If measles occurs at our school:

  • Our public health partners will perform a public health investigation to identify any students or staff who may have been exposed, while maintaining the privacy of the individual that was diagnosed.

  • Vaccination records of those who have been exposed to measles while at school will be reviewed. Students and staff who are unvaccinated or are unable to provide documentation of immunity to measles may be excluded from school/work for at least 21 days. Evidence of immunity to measles can include:

    • Documentation of measles-containing vaccine, such as the Measles, Mumps, Rubella (MMR) vaccine; or,

    • Laboratory records of antibody tests showing immunity; or,

    • Laboratory records of previous measles diagnosis; or,

    • Birth before 1957

  • Any excluded students or staff will also be asked to stay home to avoid exposing others in the community.

Recommendations:

  • Review your/ your students' vaccine records and stay up to date with vaccines. Call and schedule an appointment with your healthcare provider or at any PPS Student Health Center, as needed.

  • Exposed staff should be prepared to provide evidence of immunity upon request.

  • Review the symptom-based exclusion chart and stay home from school or work if you are unwell.

  • Monitor yourself and household members for symptoms of measles. If you believe you/your student might have measles or been exposed to measles, call your healthcare provider or medical office for further direction. Seek emergency care as needed and call ahead of your arrival to avoid spreading the virus to others.

For more information about measles, visit the Oregon Health Authority webpage. If you have questions or concerns, please call your healthcare provider or Multnomah County Health Department at 503-988-3406.

Sincerely,

Reminders Reminders

Candy Grams Fundraiser Candy Grams Fundraiser

Next week we will be selling Candy Grams at Hosford!

Typically, this is a student-to-student fundraiser, where kids can purchase cards and candy for their friends to show their appreciation for one another and raise money at the same time, but this year we are opening it up to friends and families too!

Starting Tuesday, 4/7, you can log on to School Pay and buy a Candy Gram for your student for $5.

All you need to do is tell us their name, grade, advisory class, the message you'd like us to write to them, and who it's from. Leadership will do the rest! Their Candy Gram will be delivered to them on Friday, April 17th!

This is an awesome way to spread the love AND support our school! Feel free to share the School Pay link with other family members!

Candy Gram purchasing will close Sunday, April 12 to give leadership kids time to put them all together. Thanks for supporting our kids and our school!

Outdoor School Tip for 6th Graders Outdoor School Tip for 6th Graders

With outdoor school coming soon, some 6th graders may be feeling nervous. This is normal! Over the next few weeks, we will be sharing ideas about how to help your 6th grader get more comfortable with the idea of sleeping away from home.

This week's tip: Consider having sleepovers with other Hosford families or extended family, and practice turning devices over for no-phone bedtime.

Back To School Night Feedback Back To School Night Feedback

Our Hosford Equity Committee is wondering how our Back to School Night is serving you. This is the event in September where you join me in the gym, and then move through each class period that your child has. The intention is for you to see each teacher, be in each classroom and hear about what students will be learning and how you can support at home.

Our Equity Committee is wondering if this is the best format. Specifically, they are thinking about the rigidity of the time schedule and how this makes families feel if they are not able to arrive early or keep up with the quick schedule.

Please share your thoughts with us. If it's working and you like it, please let us know. If it's not and you'd like to see it change, please let us know. Your voice matters. We are all here in service of you and your children. Click here to share your thoughts.

Attention 8th Grade Families! Attention 8th Grade Families!

Students will be headed to Marshall on April 24th for a glimpse into their freshman year. Cleveland staff will be ready to greet students and answer all their questions. We still need 5 chaperones to join us! If you are available from 1:30-4pm on April 24th, please email kacaleal@pps.net. Thank you!

The Hosford PTSA needs more helpers. We are currently operating without a president and vice president among other board members. Please consider helping even if you want to do just a small one-time task. The PTSA is responsible for fundraising and distributing around $10,000 for teacher and staff needs every school year, as well as supporting events for students and staff. We could really use help with the following events and tasks:

  • 8th Grade Oaks Park field trip help - help organize meal for the 8th graders at their end-of-year field trip in June
  • 8th Grade Promotion help - help organize reception refreshments at 8th grade promotion in June
