A Note from Mrs. Stefanich
Happy Friday Park Families!
I hope you have some fun Fall activities planned for this weekend. We have been so lucky to have weather that allows our children to be outside playing without a huge chill in the air. As we enter the colder season, please remember to send your child with layers for outside. It’s also a great idea to label all your child’s coats, hats, and gloves. This is about the time of the year that our Lost and Found explodes with clothing, and labeling helps us return those items quickly.
Carline
Did you know that Carline is something that elementary buildings across the country struggle with? We are so lucky this is the type of problem I send reminders about, because it’s such a little thing. In the mornings, would you please be sure to pull all the way up to the orange sign before unloading your children? This make such a huge difference in making our line go quickly for all families. The cars behind you thank you! Additionally, if you prefer to walk your child up, remember that the carline is on the move in the morning. You will want to cross in the cross walk by Park Avenue. If you park on Curtis, we have a crossing guard stationed to help students and families cross safely.
Conferences
Hopefully you have all had a chance to sign up for conferences with your child’s teacher. If you haven’t yet, please click here to sign up as soon as possible. We are eager to meet with you to talk about your child’s progress at school! Once again, our Hudsonville High School National Honor’s Society students will be volunteering to provide child care during conferences each night from 4:30 until 8:00. Hopefully this is helpful to you and your family.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend,
Mrs. Stefanich
Parent Teacher Conferences - K-4 Assessment Updates
As you prepare for parent-teacher conferences on November 19 and 21, I’d like to share some updates on our assessment practices in both ELA and Math. This information will give you an idea of what to expect, as some aspects may look different from previous years.
K-4 ELA Assessment Updates
For Kindergarten, we’re introducing the STAR Early Literacy assessment. This tool helps us track progress in foundational reading skills, supported by additional short, one-on-one assessments with decodable texts. These assessments allow us to identify and support each student’s unique needs in early reading.
For 1st grade, as students advance, teachers may begin using Fountas & Pinnell (F&P) assessments later in the year to monitor more complex reading skills. In grades 2-4, F&P will continue to serve as a diagnostic tool for students needing additional support, based on STAR assessment results.
K-4 Math Assessment Updates
As you know, we’re using a new math program this year called Bridges in Mathematics. Along with this new program, you may notice that our approach to math assessments looks different from what you’ve seen in the past.
Why Bridges is Different
Bridges focuses not only on specific math skills but also on developing practices & processes like problem-solving, communication, and critical thinking. Students are encouraged to understand concepts deeply and to explain their thinking, which helps build flexible, well-rounded math skills. This approach can be different from traditional assessments that focus mainly on correct answers.
What This Means for Your Child
With this new curriculum, there are two main things we want you to be aware of:
Challenging Content
Bridges is designed to be rigorous, which may mean your child finds certain topics challenging. This is expected, and we see it as a sign of growth. We will support your child through these challenges and monitor their progress to ensure they are learning at a high level.Timing of Grades
You may notice fewer grades at this point in the year. Because mastery of certain skills is expected later on, we don’t assign grades immediately after new topics are introduced. Instead, we give students time to develop their understanding fully through meaningful spaced practice and grades are shared when they are ready to show proficiency.
Thank you for your support as we work together to help your child grow as a thinker and a learner. If you have questions about Bridges or our new assessment methods, please feel free to reach out.
Doctors Note Anyone?
Did you know that we accept doctors notes when your child returns from an appointment? If your child has an extended illness or attends an appointment and the absence is accompanied by a doctors note the absence will not be flagged as truant. Under Hudsonville Pubic School guidelines if a student is above a 10% ratio of absences at any point during the school year a truancy (attendance) letter will be sent home. A doctors note makes it so the absence is not counted as part of that 10%.
P.E. Cares Food Drive
The PE CARES food drive will begin November 1st and will run until November 22. In an attempt to bring in a better variety of foods, we are asking each grade level to bring in different food g
*Pre-K, K, and 1st - Carbohydrates (pasta, rice, crackers, cereal, etc)
*2nd/3rd - Fruits and Vegetables
*4th - Proteins and Other (tuna fish, peanut butter, baked beans, etc)
**All: Toiletries (deodorant, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, etc.)
However, all food donations will be accepted, even if they don't fit into your category. The class that brings in the highest number of items will win a bowling field trip to Hudsonville Lanes! Thank you for your help and support in this community service project, and for taking this opportunity to teach our kids compassion and love for others!!
Growth Mindset Statement for November
My Mistakes Make Me Better!
Join us as we celebrate the mistakes we make! Mistakes are simply proof that our brains are growing and learning, so they are definitely worth celebrating! I encourage you to model this at home with your families. Mistakes are not something to be frustrated or discouraged about. We celebrate that they happen because we learn and grow from them!
