A Note from Mrs. Corkran
Dear Family and Friends of HES!
We had another amazing week at Hurlock Elementary! One of the highlights was a special visit from the Harlem Globetrotters. They shared an inspiring message with our students about the importance of following directions, listening carefully, paying attention, and choosing kind words and actions—even when no one is watching. Their message fit perfectly with the work we’ve been doing on routines, procedures, and processes, and our students left the assembly smiling and motivated.
I'm very excited to share that our first PTO meeting will be held tomorrow evening at 5:30 p.m. We have so many exciting events and activities planned throughout the year, and we would love your support in making them a success! Your involvement makes a huge difference in creating memorable experiences for our students.
Looking ahead, please mark your calendars for Monday, September 23rd at 5:30 p.m. for our Title I PAC meeting in the cafeteria. This evening will celebrate the accomplishments of our amazing students from last year, highlight the plans we have in place to continue improving this year, and give you an opportunity to share ideas or ask questions about how Title I supports our students. More information will be coming soon, but we hope you will join us for this important conversation.
At the end of last week, our students began taking the iReady Diagnostic for Math, and this week they will begin the DIBELS diagnostic for English Language Arts. Our Kindergarten students have also started their KRA (Kindergarten Readiness Assessment), which is a state-normed assessment designed to help us understand where each child is as they begin their school journey.
These assessments and diagnostics are important tools for us. They give us a clear picture of where your student is academically compared to same-age peers, and more importantly, they help us tailor our instruction to meet each child’s needs and support their continued growth.
I think it's important to reiterate what was shared last week on how you can help your child succeed each and every day, here are a few simple ways you can support learning at home:
✨ Read with your child every night—take turns reading or make it a fun family activity
✨ Keep consistent evening and bedtime routines
✨ Ensure your child arrives at school before 8:45 each morning
✨ Keep them in school until our 3:45 dismissal—learning happens right up to the end of the day
✨ Talk with them about their day! Ask questions like:
Who did you talk to today?
What did you learn?
Who did you help?
What is something that made you feel happy?
How did you make someone smile?
What’s one thing you’d like to do differently tomorrow?
Encouraging your child to answer in complete sentences helps them reflect on their day and grow as a thinker, communicator, and member of our school community.
We are so proud of the effort our students are already showing, and we look forward to learning and growing together!
With much love,
Mrs. Corkran

Soaring Scholar of the Month
✨ Introducing Something New at HES: Soaring Scholar of the Month! ✨
We are so excited to launch a brand-new tradition this year—our Soaring Scholar of the Month program! Here’s how it will work:
-
📢 Kickoff: On the first day of each month, we’ll announce the character trait of the month during morning announcements, along with its definition.
-
💡 Focus: Throughout the month, our school community will spotlight the character trait and celebrate the ways students demonstrate it in their daily actions.
-
🏅 Recognition: On the last day of the month, each homeroom teacher will submit the name of one student who best represented that month’s trait. These names will be announced during morning announcements.
-
🎉 Celebration: Selected students will gather in the cafeteria to receive a certificate, take a group photo, and be recognized on our social media platforms.
-
🔄 Next Trait: The new character trait will then be announced on the first day of the next month, and the cycle begins again!
This is a wonderful way to highlight not only academic success, but also the positive character and leadership skills that help our Eagles soar every day! 🦅
September - Respect
Our soaring scholar of the month for September is Respect. Respect means treating others the way you want to be treated. That means listening when someone is speaking, using kind words, and taking care of things that don’t belong to you. Let’s show respect in our school every day!
