Message from the Superintendent

August 7, 2023

Dear Students, Staff, Parents, and Beloved Community Members,

As we stand on the threshold of a new school year, we extend a heartfelt welcome back to the Bellflower Unified School District family! The familiar rhythm of bustling hallways, eager students, and dedicated educators reminds us of the vibrant energy that defines our community. We are overjoyed to have you with us once again, as we embark on a journey filled with growth, discovery, and boundless opportunities.

Our commitment to your safety remains unwavering, and we are excited to share some impactful developments that will further enhance our learning environment. First and foremost, we extend our gratitude to the 4,100 participants who shared their invaluable insights through the safety survey. Your feedback has guided us in adopting new safety protocols, ensuring that each student, staff member, and visitor feels secure and supported. Among the measures we will implement for the 2023-2024 school year:

Parent Workshops on Student Safety: We recognize the importance of transparent communication with our parents and guardians. To foster a deeper understanding of safety protocols, we will host workshops that empower you with the knowledge needed to ensure the well-being of our students.

Detection Canines and Visitor Management System: Our commitment to safety is exemplified by the introduction of detection canines at secondary schools and a sophisticated visitor management system at our front offices. These measures underscore our dedication to maintaining a secure and welcoming environment.

Active Shooter Training: In the pursuit of preparedness, we are investing in additional active shooter training for our administration and staff. This comprehensive training equips our team with the tools and know-how to respond effectively in any situation.

But that's not all; our commitment to communication and engagement extends beyond safety measures. We are thrilled to share that our efforts to foster meaningful connections within our community are taking exciting new directions:

Redesigned Website and Enhanced Social Media Presence: This December, get ready to explore our redesigned website, a platform that will provide you with easier access to information and resources. Our revitalized social media presence will keep you informed about the latest news, events, and achievements across our district.

Improved Parent Communication Through Parent Square: In the spirit of strengthening our partnership with parents, we are piloting an improved parent communication program through Parent Square at three of our school sites. This initiative will pave the way for enhanced collaboration and engagement before a full-scale implementation in the 2024-25 school year.

Enhanced Accessibility to Board Meetings: Recognizing the importance of inclusive participation, we are excited to introduce Spanish interpretation during our live-streamed board meetings to start on a date yet to be determined this 23-24 school year. This initiative ensures that our entire community can engage with and contribute to our discussions.

As we journey through this academic year, we invite you to participate in shaping our new strategic plan through a process I will conduct involving student reps, parents, staff members, and the larger community. Our community's values and priorities will guide us as we chart a course towards improvement and innovation through the establishment of a 5-year strategic plan to be adopted by the school board in the spring. Through collaborative efforts, research-based initiatives, and your continued dedication, we will collectively lay the foundation for a bright future.

Our schools are not just places of learning; they are vibrant centers of inspiration, discovery, and growth. Together, we will shape a future that mirrors our shared aspirations, where innovation and collaboration thrive.

Welcome back to the Bellflower Unified School District – where safety, communication, and education converge in a symphony of possibility.

With anticipation and warmth,

Ben Drati, Ed.D
