Together We Thrive

A New School Year, New Opportunities to Inspire Potential!
With the new school year underway, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Sierra (BBBSNS) is excited to see our school-based and community partnerships thriving as Bigs and Littles reconnect and build meaningful relationships!
Our Bigs with Badges (BwB) programs are bringing Littles together with first responders and county officials who serve as positive role models, building trust, confidence and valuable interpersonal connections. Our growing PALS programs empower high school students to develop leadership skills while serving as mentors and role models for younger students. Our BwB Programs also foster positive relationships between youth and law enforcement, including through the annual Snowball event in early December, when local law enforcement agencies and community members join children for a special holiday shopping experience organized by District Attorney Vern Pierson’s office.
We are also grateful for our continued partnership with the Boys & Girls Club of Western Slope, where Bigs and Littles meet at Club locations throughout the region, including Georgetown and Placerville. Additional mentoring programs are taking place at several local schools, creating even more opportunities for meaningful connections.
These relationships do more than brighten a child's day. They give Littles something special to look forward to at school and inspire them to show up, make positive choices and become the best versions of themselves. Knowing someone believes in them and is proud of their accomplishments can make a transformative difference! Through character-driven mentorship, we are helping young people build confidence, strengthen relationships and develop the skills they need for a brighter future. Match of the Month: A Friendship Built to Last!
We are delighted to celebrate Big Brother Jonathan Rolls and his Little, Charlie, as our Match of the Month! Their story is a wonderful example of how meaningful mentorship can grow into a lifelong friendship.
Jonathan was first introduced to Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Sierra (BBBSNS) through his employer, DST Innovis, when a colleague serving on the BBBSNS Board of Directors invited him to a fundraising event. A trained chef, Jonathan initially supported the organization by donating culinary experiences to fundraising auctions. Inspired by the mission and his own experience raising two children with his wife, he decided to give back in an even more meaningful way by becoming a Big Brother.
Jonathan and Charlie were first matched through our Beyond School Walls program. As their friendship grew, they transitioned into a community-based match, creating even more opportunities to spend time together. Now, more than two years later, they have built an elaborate model train layout, enjoyed cooking adventures and shared plenty of ice cream!
As Charlie approaches his teenage years, Jonathan shares, "It is rewarding to see him growing into a polite, intelligent young man." Perhaps the greatest testament to their special bond? Charlie already talks about continuing their friendship for years to come! Thank you, Jonathan, for investing your time, talents and heart into Charlie's future. Your friendship demonstrates the power of mentorship and why every child deserves a champion in their corner!
BBBSNS Hosts “Squirrel Party” Celebrating Mentorship, Literacy and BIG Feelings
Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Sierra (BBBSNS) recently welcomed Bigs, Littles and families to its Placerville office for a special “Squirrel Party” featuring local author Erin Dealey and her book, Squirrel Draws BIG Feelings. The September 30 event was part of BBBSNS’ “Beyond Mentoring” efforts to create meaningful experiences that bring matches and families together while supporting youth development, creativity and connection.
Dealey shared Squirrel Draws BIG Feelings with attendees, encouraging young people to recognize and express their emotions through creativity. Following the reading, Bigs, Littles and families headed outside the BBBSNS office on Main Street in Placerville, where they used sidewalk chalk to draw and express their own “BIG feelings.” Erin expressed, “What a wonderful evening celebrating reading and drawing our BIG feelings! Thank you to the entire team at BBBSNS and to the Bigs and Littles.”
“We know that mentoring is about so much more than spending time together,” said Florence Parks, BBBSNS’ CEO. “Experiences like this give our Littles opportunities to express themselves, build confidence and create lasting memories alongside the caring adults in their lives. We are incredibly grateful to Erin for sharing her time and talents with our families.”
BBBSNS provides professionally supported one-to-one mentoring relationships for youth throughout El Dorado and Nevada counties and eastern Placer County. Through community-based and site-based programs, the organization connects young people with caring adult or high school mentors who help ignite their potential and support their social, emotional and academic development.
