Juneteenth Day in Chelsea
Chelsea Black Community (CBC) will be hosting Juneteenth Day on, June 19th, 2026 at Washington Park (386 Washington Avenue) in Chelsea from 12:00-5:00pm.
Juneteenth commemorates the end of slavery in the United States. It marks June 19, 1865, when Union soldiers arrived in Galveston and announced that the Civil War had ended and that enslaved African Americans were free. This occurred more than two years after the issuance of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth is a celebration of freedom, resilience, and the ongoing pursuit of equality and justice.
Last Day of School - Tuesday, June 23rd
A friendly reminder that the last day of school is this Tuesday, June 23rd, for all schools. It will also be an Early Release Day for students.

CHELSEA VIRTUAL LEARNING ACADEMY UPDATES
This Week at CVLA
Last week, CVLA students celebrated community, creativity, and culture during Comparsa Week, made possible through the Youth Empowerment Grant from La Colaborativa.
Students also participated in their final Healing Circle of the year, coming together to create art, strengthen connections, and support one another.
Comparsa Week
Our celebration was inspired by Comparsa, a documentary directed by Vickie Curtis and Doug Anderson and produced by Chelsea’s own Anna Hadingham. The film follows sisters Lesli and Lupe Pérez in Guatemala as they use art and performance to advocate against gender violence and promote social change.
Comparsa Week began with a trip to Canobie Lake Park, where students enjoyed a day of fun and had the opportunity to connect with their virtual teachers in person. On Tuesday, students, teachers, and alumni gathered at the Chelsea Public Library to watch Comparsa.
On Wednesday, students participated in a virtual poetry and creative writing workshop similar to those led throughout the year by Roberto Germán through our partnership with Multicultural Classroom. Over the course of 15 weeks, students explored creative writing, social justice, identity, and the power of using their voices to create change in their communities. The session concluded with the premiere of a mini CVLA Comparsa documentary, created with the support of Anna Hadingham, featuring student poetry recordings developed during the course.
We are closing out the week with a lesson on Juneteenth, exploring its significance and the importance of freedom, justice, and equity for all.
MESSAGES FROM OUR COMMUNITY PARTNERS
BU Dental to Provide No-Cost Dental Care to Students this Summer
BU Smart Smiles is a school-based dental program from Boston University’s Henry M. Goldman School of Dental Medicine that provides no-cost preventive dental care to Chelsea Public Schools students during the school day.
This summer, our team of dentists and dental assistants will be on-site at Chelsea schools with mobile dental equipment to provide services to students.
Our goal is to bring preventive dental care directly to students, especially those who do not regularly visit a dentist, although the program is open to all students. Students who enroll may receive care multiple times throughout the school year, and parents can withdraw consent at any time by contacting the program. Children who already have a regular dentist are encouraged to continue care with their provider instead of enrolling.
The program offers a full range of preventive services, including dental exams, cleanings, fluoride treatments, sealants, and the use of silver diamine fluoride to prevent or slow cavities. Students also receive dental supplies such as toothbrushes and toothpaste. After each visit, families receive a report on their child’s dental health, along with referrals if additional treatment is needed.
