HMS Celebration

2026 is a big year for us. In addition to celebrating the 250th anniversary of the United States of America – Hedgesville Middle is celebrating 50 years of being a middle school and the front part of this building, which was originally the Hedgesville Graded School, is turning 100 years old!

The first building was built in 1866 and was a one-room log building. The cost of the building was $1,500.

In 1884, the old building was torn down and a new brick building was built.

In 1888, the school was enlarged and made a first-class high school.

In 1925, the people voted a $7,500 bond issue for a new building. This building was completed in 1926. It was used to teach grades 1 – 12 until 1951. There were four grade school teachers and 3 high school teachers.

From 1951 – 1976, grades 7 – 12 were taught.

In 1955 the building acquired an addition which included 12 new classrooms, a cafeteria, and an auditorium.

In 1962 the present-day gym and cafeteria were built, 2 science classrooms, a Vo-Ag room and room for expansion.

In 1970, the band room was built.

In 1976, the new Hedgesville High School was opened and our building became Hedgesville Middle School.

In 1989, there was a major addition and the first computer lab was constructed.

In 1996, the final addition added 14 classrooms, a new parking lot, and a new bus route.
