Holocaust Remembrance Instructional Resources (Jan. 26-30)
The mission of the Texas Holocaust, Genocide, and Antisemitism Advisory Commission (THGAAC) is to combat and confront hatred, prejudice, and indifference by educating all Texans about the Holocaust and other genocides in an effort to dismantle antisemitism and prevent such future atrocities.
Instructional resources provided by the THGAAC are available to local educational agencies throughout the year, especially during Holocaust Remembrance Week, which next occurs the week of January 23–30, 2026. During this week, Texas Education Code, §29.9072,requires public schools to provide age-appropriate instruction on the Holocaust using resources developed or approved by the THGAAC.
The THGAAC web page for Holocaust Remembrance Week provides resources that can be used during Holocaust Remembrance Week as well as other times of the year:

2nd Nine Weeks Benchmark Data
Below you'll find the 2nd nine weeks benchmark data analysis that we went over in the Jan. 6th PD.
Consistency
3rd Nine-Weeks Benchmark
As a reminder for 8th and 11th grade your 3rd nine weeks benchmark is the 2025 released STAAR. Middle School your benchmark date has changed to March 9th and High School yours is still March 11-12.
Student Work Analysis in Social Studies: Why is it important?
1. Reveals Learning Gaps, Not Just Scores
Student work analysis goes beyond marking answers right or wrong on a map, timeline, document analysis, or discussion prompt. It helps teachers uncover why students are struggling—whether it’s confusion about cause and effect, misunderstanding of vocabulary, mixing up historical sequences, or misinterpreting primary sources.
This process is diagnostic rather than evaluative. Instead of focusing on a grade, it clarifies what content or thinking skills students still need support with before they can show mastery of Social Studies concepts.
2. Drives Targeted, Purposeful Reteach
- By grouping student samples into strengths and needs, teachers can see patterns across the classroom—who struggles with geographic reasoning, who misunderstands government structures, or who needs help analyzing evidence.
- This allows reteach to be precise and meaningful, not just a repeat of the original lesson. Teachers can plan interventions that clarify misconceptions, strengthen academic vocabulary, and build historical thinking skills so students can access grade-level content successfully.
3. Ensures Standards Alignment and Rigor
- Analyzing student work against the Teacher Exemplar and Know&Show chart helps teachers confirm that students are engaging with the Social Studies TEKS at the level they were intended—interpreting sources, applying knowledge, making connections, and explaining significance.
- This process keeps the focus on student understanding rather than task completion. It also ensures every student—regardless of performance level—continues to engage with grade-level standards and has opportunities to grow their historical thinking.
Coaching
Vocabulary Is Power: Speaking the Language of History
Join us for Vocabulary Is Power: Speaking the Language of History, a fast-paced PD designed to boost student comprehension, confidence, and classroom discourse in secondary social studies. We’ll explore strategies that go beyond word walls—chunking complex terms, connecting academic language to lived experiences, and building fluency with content-specific vocabulary that shows up in TEKS and STAAR. You’ll leave with practical routines, ready-to-use classroom tools, and activities that help students talk like historians, argue like scholars, and read like experts. If language is power, let’s give our students the keys!
Virtual PD: STAAR Swap Shop-Overview Lessons That Work. (Feb. 11th)
This collaborative session brings together secondary social studies teachers from across the district to share their best short-form overviews, hooks, and scaffolds that help students build context quickly—without copying notes for 45 minutes. Walk away with ready-to-use templates, digital tools, and teacher-tested activities that make review lessons meaningful, engaging, and STAAR-aligned. Bring one idea and leave with twenty… plus a few new teammates in your instructional toolbox. Come ready to swap, learn, and spark student thinking!
Lowman's Tip of the Month
Spiral to Mastery
As the fall semester comes to an end, keep key concepts fresh by using our warm-ups and/or assignments, which incorporate spiral review. Spending a few minutes each day revisiting previous lessons helps students retain content and build confidence.
Tip in Action: Our retention chart illustrates how consistent, spiraled review significantly boosts student retention over time. A structured approach to review can make a lasting impact. Learn more from Alan Lowman in our short YouTube video by clicking the link below.
