One Family, One Destiny
We have 4 days under our belt in the 2nd 9 week. This week's message is about GRIT! Our teens are learning that success isn't always about being the smartest or getting everything right the first time. It's about showing up, putting in the effort, learning from mistakes, and refusing to give up.
Here are five important actions we want every Del Valle student to practice this quarter:
1. Show Up Every Day and Be On Time
Attendance matters! Every lesson builds on the one before it. Being present and on time gives students the opportunity to learn, practice, ask questions, and grow.
2. Give Your Best Effort
Don't settle for doing just enough to get by. Complete assignments, participate in class, study, and take pride in your work. Effort matters, even when learning is difficult.
3. Ask for Help and Learn From Mistakes
Not understanding something the first time is normal. Ask questions, accept feedback, correct mistakes, and try again. Mistakes should lead to learning, not giving up.
4. Take Responsibility for Your Choices
Come prepared, follow expectations, treat others respectfully, and make choices that support learning. Developing responsibility now builds habits that will matter in high school and beyond.
5. Set Goals and Monitor Your Progress
Know your grades, track missing assignments, identify areas for improvement, and celebrate growth. Don't wait until the end of the nine weeks to make changes. Small actions every day lead to big results.
Our goal isn't perfection. It's progress, responsibility, resilience, and a willingness to keep learning.
Quarter 2 is a fresh opportunity to show what we're capable of. Let's make it count!
💙 Quarter 2: let's get it! 💙

Patriot's Pen
Patriot's Pen
Each year, more than 800,600 students in sixth through eighth grades enter the VFW’s Patriot’s Pen® annual youth essay contest for a chance to win their share of more than $1 million in local and national awards. Each first place VFW Department (state) winner receives a minimum of $500 at the national level, and the national first place winner wins $5,000!
The essay contest encourages young minds to examine America’s history, along with their own experiences in modern American society, by drafting a 300- to 400-word essay, expressing their views based on a patriotic theme chosen by the VFW Commander-in-Chief. Students interested in participating must submit their essay prepared on this year's theme, with a completed 2026-2027 entry form, to their local participating VFW Post. Find your sponsoring local VFW Post as applications must be turned in by midnight, Oct. 31.
The 2026-27 theme is:
“What a Veteran Taught Me About America.”
About the 2025-2026 winner ...
Andrew Ge, an eighth grade student from San Ramon, California, was named the 2025-2026 Patriot's Pen first place winner. His essay on the theme, "How Are You Showing Patriotism and Support for Our Country?" won the national first place $5,000 award. Ge was sponsored by San Ramon Valley VFW Post 75 located in Danville, California.
Watch as Ge delivered his winning essay during the 2026 VFW Parade of Winners ceremony that was streamed live from the Union League of Philadelphia, or read his essay here. See the complete list of 2026 national winners.
The Wyland National Art and Mural Challenge
ELIGIBILITY: The contest is open to all United States- based classrooms. Contest categories include Grades K-5, 6-8, 9-12
Student Attendance
Attendance Target for each grade level: 96%
You miss a day, you miss a lot!
8 periods, 8 assignments, 8 opportunities for learning
You get pulled out early, you miss a lot!
Top 3 Reasons Middle School Attendance Matters
1. Attendance is strongly connected to academic achievement.
Students with lower attendance tend to have lower grades and test scores. Recent University of Chicago research on grades 6–11 found that attendance remains strongly related to achievement even in the post-pandemic period. ERIC
2. Middle school attendance predicts future high school success.
University of Chicago research found that grades and attendance (not test scores) were the middle-grade factors most strongly connected with later high school and college success. Students who improved their attendance during the middle grades were also more likely to perform well in high school. ERIC
3. Chronic absence can have long term consequences.
A longitudinal study found that chronic absence during the early middle grades was associated with lower eighth-grade math achievement and a substantially lower likelihood of graduating from high school on time. PubMed Central (PMC)
Attendance is academic. Every day a student is present is another opportunity to receive grade level instruction, practice new skills, get feedback, and receive intervention when needed. Research shows that middle school attendance is strongly connected not only to achievement today, but to success in high school later.
Whenever possible, please schedule routine appointments and family activities outside of the school day and make daily, on time attendance a priority.
Reduce Monday and Friday absences!!

DVMS Athletics
⚖️ UIL Extracurricular Event Conduct & Ejection Rule
To ensure a safe and respectful environment at all extracurricular athletic events, students and spectators are expected to demonstrate appropriate behavior.
Event officials have the authority to immediately eject a student or spectator for inappropriate behavior. A verbal warning is not required before an ejection.
Inappropriate behavior may also result in the individual being banned from district property in accordance with district policy.
Assaulting a UIL official in retaliation for performing their duties results in an immediate prohibition from participating in future UIL or school-district extracurricular activities.
Bottom line for our families:
🏆 Support our students. Respect the officials. Represent DVMS with pride.

Sick Day Guidelines
When should my teen stay home?
YISD Sick Day Guidelines: Key Points for Families
Fever: Keep your child home with a temperature of 100°F or higher. Students may return after being fever-free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication. Do not give fever medication simply to lower the temperature and then send the student to school.
Vomiting or diarrhea: Students should remain home and return after they have been symptom-free for 24 hours. For diarrhea, the guidelines specify 3 or more loose/runny stools within 24 hours and that the student should also be able to tolerate a normal diet before returning.
Severe or uncontrolled cough: Keep your child home when coughing is severe or uncontrolled, even without fever. Coughing accompanied by fast or difficult breathing, wheezing, or fever should be evaluated by a healthcare provider.
Flu-like illness: A student with a cough and fever of 100°F or higher should stay home until the cough is mild and the student has been fever-free for 24 hours without medication.
Pink eye/conjunctivitis: Students with symptoms should remain home until evaluated by a healthcare provider. If bacterial, they may return after 24 hours of antibiotic treatment, and a healthcare provider's note is required to return.
Unexplained rash: Students should remain home until evaluated by a healthcare provider to determine whether the rash is contagious. A healthcare provider's note is required to return.
Possible strep throat: Significant sore throat, especially with pain when swallowing and other symptoms, should be evaluated. Students may return after 24 hours of antibiotics AND 24 hours fever-free without fever-reducing medication. A healthcare provider's note is required.
Student Discipline and Safety
Gun Safety
Dear Ysleta ISD parent/guardian,
Texas law now requires school districts to distribute information to parents and guardians about the safe storage of firearms. The attached information will help you learn about options – as well as how to talk to your child and others – regarding the safe storage of firearms.
It is unlawful to store, transport, or abandon an unsecured firearm in a place where children are likely to be and can obtain access to the firearm. Under Texas Penal Code 46.13, a person commits the offense of making a firearm accessible to a child if the child gains access to a readily dischargeable firearm, and the person with criminal negligence:
Failed to secure the firearm; or
Left the firearm in a place to which the person knew or should have known the child would gain access.
The penalty for allowing a child access to a firearm can range from a Class C misdemeanor (punishable by a $500 fine) to a Class A misdemeanor (punishable by a $4000 fine, a year in jail, or a combination of the two). Texas exempts the purchase of firearm safety equipment from Texas Sales and Use Tax.
Remember, a gun should be stored unloaded in a safe or locked container, with ammunition stored elsewhere. You can learn more and find additional resources from the Texas Department of Public Safety at https://safegunstoragetexas.com.
Sincerely,
Ysleta ISD Office of Emergency Management & Preparedness
