The Gilbert School E-News
September/October 2026
A Message from the Head of School: A Strong Start to a New School Year
Students, Families, Faculty, and Staff,
As we settle into the new school year, it has been wonderful to see the energy and excitement throughout The Gilbert School community. The first few weeks of school have given us the opportunity to reconnect, establish routines, welcome new members of our community, and begin working toward the goals we have set for the year ahead.
A new school year is about more than simply returning to the classroom. It is an opportunity to build new relationships, discover new interests, challenge ourselves, and continue growing as individuals and as a school community. Already, our students are getting involved in classrooms, athletics, clubs, activities, and events that make Gilbert such a special place to learn and grow.
I am especially grateful to our faculty and staff for the time, care, and dedication they have put into creating a positive and welcoming start to the year. Their commitment to our students is evident each day, and I appreciate all they do to support both academic success and the many experiences that take place beyond the classroom.
To our families, thank you for your continued partnership and support. A strong school community depends on the collaboration between our students, families, faculty, and staff, and we are grateful for the role each of you plays in making The Gilbert School a place where students can thrive.
To our students, I encourage you to continue approaching this year with curiosity, determination, and an open mind. Take advantage of opportunities to get involved, ask questions, try something new, and support those around you. The habits and relationships we build at the beginning of the year can help shape a successful and meaningful year ahead.
As September continues, I look forward to seeing our school community continue to grow, learn, and come together. There is much to look forward to, and I am excited for all that this school year will bring.
Hereβs to a fantastic year ahead and plenty of Yellowjacket pride!
With gratitude and best wishes,
Michael Susi
Head of School
π Terrence Talley Inspires Students Through Kindness & Positivity
By Madison Fritch, Communications Coordinator
The Gilbert School was proud to welcome guest speaker Terrence Talley for an uplifting and meaningful assembly focused on kindness, positivity, empathy, and looking out for one another.
Through personal experiences and an encouraging message, Mr. Talley reminded students that each of us has the ability to make a positive difference in the lives of others. Whether it is offering encouragement, standing up for someone, or simply lending a helping hand, even small acts of kindness can make a lasting impact.
Students were encouraged to think about the role they play in creating a supportive school community and the importance of building one another up, especially during challenging moments.
We are incredibly grateful to the W.L. Gilbert Trust for making this experience possible through a generous donation from The Carter Family Fund. Opportunities like this help reinforce the values of compassion, empathy, and connection that we strive to instill in our students each day. π
The assembly was a wonderful reminder that kindness has the power to make a difference, and it starts with each of us. πβ¨
π Alumni & Friends Gathering
By Chris Sandford, Director of Development
On September 8, more than 30 Gilbert School alumni and friends came together for our Hartford-area Alumni Gathering, with alumni spanning more than 50 years of Gilbert history. It was a wonderful evening filled with reconnecting, laughter, memories, and celebrating the things that make The Gilbert School community so special.
It was clear that no matter how many years have passed since you walked the halls of Gilbert, the connections and memories remain.
Gilbert will be hosting several more regional Alumni & Friends gatherings in the months ahead. Please take a look at where we will be visiting this year, and share the link with Gilbert alumni and friends who may be in these cities.
π Callen & Ella Selected for CIAC Student Athlete Advisory Board
We are proud to recognize Callen Jeannette and Ella Jeannette, who were nominated to represent The Gilbert School on the Connecticut Interscholastic Athletic Conference (CIAC) Student Athlete Advisory Board (SAAB).
The Student Athlete Advisory Board brings student-athletes together to provide a student perspective on Connecticut interscholastic athletics. Callen and Ella have already attended their first meeting and will continue to participate throughout the school year.
This is a wonderful opportunity for them to represent The Gilbert School, connect with student-athletes from across Connecticut, and have a voice in conversations surrounding high school athletics. We are excited to see all they will contribute in this new leadership opportunity! πππ
The CIAC's official calendar lists Student Athlete Advisory Board meetings throughout the 2026β27 school year.

π A Strong Start to the Season!
By Josh Penn, Athletic Director
The fall season has been off to an amazing start. All of our High School Sports have played several games so far. Boys Soccer got their first win in several seasons led by Senior Captain James Slauta, Junior Captain Toby King and Sophomore Captain Jordan Higgins. Girls soccer has also been getting better every game. The young team is showing promise, and adjusting to the new co-op with Terryville has been difficult, but they are getting better every day. Volleyball got the wins rolling this fall with a big win over Achievement First. The team is led by Juniors Kyleigh Kinsman and Natalie Kent as well as Sophomores Avery Lillie, Millie Burcroff and Sabrina Lai. This is the first win and will help on our road to making the state tournament. Cross Country participated in the Berkshire League Scrimmage at Black Rock State Park. Every runner on our team set a PR at the race! The golf team is steadily improving every match. They shot a team best at their match at Green Woods Country Club against Shepaug. The team shot a 189 led by medalist Sophomore Gio Acquah. Football and Cheer head to Naugatuck on October 3rd for the third game of the season, still searching for their first win. Middle school games have begun and the teams have been fighting hard. They look for their first wins in soccer and cross country and hope to get them in the coming weeks.

Residential Life News
By Joshua Perez, Director of Residential Life
Recent Activities & Community Highlights
Weβve had a great time in Residential Life recently, and weβre excited to share a few highlights from the past couple of weeks!
Student Ambassador Meet & Greet
Our Residential Life students had the opportunity to spend time with some of The Gilbert Schoolβs amazing Student Ambassadors!
The ambassadors came over to the dorms for a fun meet & greet, giving our boarding students the opportunity to get to know more students from the broader Gilbert community. It was a great chance for everyone to connect, have conversations, and build new friendships.
Weβre excited to continue creating opportunities for our boarding students and Student Ambassadors to spend time together throughout the school year!
Authentic Chinese Dinner in West Hartford
One of the highlights of these past weeks was getting off campus and enjoying dinner together at an authentic Chinese restaurant in West Hartford!
The food was absolutely delicious, and it was a great opportunity for our students spending time together outside of the dorm. Everyone had a great time trying different dishes, sharing food, and enjoying the evening together.
Weβre always looking for opportunities to expose our students to new experiences, different cultures, and the many things our local communities have to offer.
Building Our ResLife Community
Our goal in Residential Life goes beyond providing students with a place to live. We want our students to feel connected, supported, and involved in the Gilbert community.
From meeting new friends to exploring local restaurants and communities, weβre excited about all the experiences still to come this year!
Stay tuned for more Residential Life activities, events, and student highlights!
