“Foster Growth by Challenging Critical Thinkers to Take Risks,
Honor Differences & Care for Others”
WORLD CLASS WRITERS
Students at all grade levels are demonstrating strong growth as writers. Kindergarten and fifth graders are currently learning how to incorporate research into their writing. Kindergartners are writing All About Books about their favorite animals. They are using Pebble Go to research animal’s habitats, diets and unique features. Our oldest students are using evidence to support their argument pieces. Students are researching a range of topics, including the use of plastic bottles and bags, the need to protect sharks, allowing people to climb Mount Everest and zoos versus wildlife santuraries. Students are researching the pros and cons of their topic and using their most compelling evidence to support their opinion.
First and third graders are expressing their opinions. First grade students wrote reviews on Gold Rush for their final writing assessments. We were proud to get 5 stars for our kind teachers, engaging specials, fun playground equipment and new library! Third graders are planning and writing five paragraph essays on topics such as the best parts of a season and ways to improve Gold Rush.
We are proud of students' effort and progress! We look forward to sharing students’ pieces at Spring conferences next week!
GOAL SETTING
Goal setting is a routine practice at Gold Rush. It is used to reflect on accomplishments and identify opportunities for growth. Students write both academic, social and emotional goals. Individual academic goals are displayed on students' goal sheets, checklists and class anchor charts and serve as a guide for independent and small group work.
Many students are currently setting new goals for the remainder of the year. First graders are currently displaying their “Pots of Goals” in the hallway. They are challenging themselves to live a growth mindset by setting and revising goals. Students shared the following:
“I will not give up when things get hard.”
“I will be a more precise mathematician.”
“I will work independently.”
“I will try a new sport.”
“I will be the best me!”
We appreciate students’ desire to reflect and push themselves in new and different ways. We know that the practice of goal setting will allow them to continue to learn and grow in life.
