Attendance Matters

Please remember it is important for parents/guardians to write a note when their child is absent. The note must be received by the school within three school days of the child’s return to school. If the note is not received within three school days the absence will be considered unexcused. Attendance rates are now counted towards our school accreditation. After 10 excused absences, a doctor’s note will be required. Feel free to email Mrs. Tomlin, School Nurse at htomlin@amherst.k12.va.us.

Communication

We would like to take the time to stress the importance of communication. We are a team and we need to know your concerns and affirmations. We have implemented several communication tools to assist in making the faculty, staff, and administration easily accessible. Teachers are sending home newsletters along with these tools, teachers will be communicating via email and google meets. We also welcome you to call the school with any questions. Just a reminder – always let the office know if your child’s regular schedule changes and you need a bus pass or car rider pass.

Red Ribbon Week

We will be celebrating RED RIBBON WEEK October 23th- October 30th. Red Ribbon Week, the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the nation, is your opportunity to get the ongoing conversation started. This year’s theme is “Make A Difference. Be A Hero. Stay Drug Free.” Please, visit www.redribbon.org to learn more about Red Ribbon Week and get tips for talking to your kids about drugs. The life you save may be that of your own child or dear friend. TES Before & After School

Our Before and After School program provides before and after school child care to TES students in grades K-5. If you are interested, please contact the TES Office at 434-946-2811.

Volunteers

ALL VOLUNTEERS must be fingerprinted prior to chaperoning or volunteering at a school function. Chaperones and volunteers must complete a background check prior to serving as a chaperone or volunteer. There is no charge for the background check: however, results of the check can sometimes take several weeks. Please complete your background check well in advance of scheduled field trips or activities that you wish to chaperone or participate in as a volunteer. Individuals should come to the Human Resources Office to complete background checks. Background checks are required to be updated every 5 years. Monday - Friday: 9:00 - 10:00 a.m. & 2:00 - 3:00 p.m.

*Background checks will not be processed when school is closed (holidays, staff development days, inclement weather, etc.) For more information, please contact the Human Resources Office at 434-946-9376, or email hr@amherst.k12.va.us

Speaking of volunteers, we’re looking for parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles who might be willing to help during lunchtime. Extra hands make a big difference — opening milk cartons, helping with ketchup packets, wiping tables, and supporting our Tigers as they eat. If you’re interested in lending a hand, we’d love to have you join us. Lunch takes place from 11:00-1:00. Please give Mrs. Bobbie a call if you're interested.

Greetings from Mr. Martin

Dear Temperance Elementary Families,

The cooler weather has finally arrived in Amherst, and our students and staff are enjoying the much‑needed break from the lingering summer heat. The crisp mornings have brought a fresh energy to campus as we move steadily toward the end of the first quarter. With that milestone approaching, teachers are focused on keeping learning strong and routines consistent. Benchmark testing for grades 3–5 will begin soon, giving us important insight into how our Tigers are progressing and where we can support them further. We appreciate the hard work students have been putting in as they prepare for these assessments. The shift in seasons also means one of our favorite events is almost here—Field Day is right around the corner. Excitement is already building, and we’re looking forward to a day filled with teamwork, fun, and school spirit. As always, we’re proud of how thoughtful, trustworthy, and team‑oriented our Temperance Tigers continue to be each day.

Go Tigers! 🐾🐾
