Supporting an IB Education: A Note to Parents
Questions, Inquiry, and Curiosity
In the International Baccalaureate (IB) program, asking questions isn't just encouraged – it's celebrated as a vital tool for learning and growth. But why is it so important, and how can you support your child in developing this skill?
Curiosity Is Key: Children are naturally curious, and asking questions fuels that curiosity. Encourage your child to wonder about the world around them and support their inquiries by exploring topics together.
Thinking Critically: Good questions lead to critical thinking. By asking why, how, and what-if questions, students learn to analyze information, evaluate ideas, and form their own opinions.
Empowering Independence: In IB, students are encouraged to take charge of their learning. By asking questions, they learn to seek answers independently, becoming confident and self-reliant learners.
Deep Understanding: Asking good questions isn't just about finding answers – it's about understanding concepts deeply. By delving into topics and asking meaningful questions, students gain a richer understanding of the world.
Communication Skills: Asking questions isn't just about talking – it's about listening too. Encourage your child to ask questions and engage in discussions, helping them develop strong communication skills.
So, how can you help? Encourage your child to ask questions, be curious together, and celebrate their inquiries. Provide access to resources, be a role model by asking questions yourself, and focus on the process of learning rather than just the answers.
By nurturing curiosity and fostering the art of asking questions, you're not just supporting your child's education – you're helping them become thinkers, problem-solvers, and lifelong learners.

Cultivating International Mindedness
Earth Day: Helping Students Protect Our Planet
Earth Day (April 22) is a special time when people all over the world come together to celebrate and protect our planet. For families with children in programs like the International Baccalaureate (IB), such as the Middle Years Programme (MYP) and Primary Years Programme (PYP), Earth Day holds even more significance. It's an opportunity to weave the core philosophies of IB into our efforts to nurture environmentally conscious citizens.
Here's how families can infuse IB principles into their Earth Day celebrations:
Inquiry: Encourage kids to ask questions about the environment. Why is it important to protect nature? How do people in different parts of the world care for the Earth? Foster curiosity and critical thinking about environmental issues.
Action: Earth Day is all about taking action. Participate in local clean-up events, start a recycling program at home, or plant a garden together. These hands-on activities empower children to see the impact of their actions and develop a sense of responsibility for the planet.
Global Engagement: Explore diverse perspectives on environmental stewardship from around the world. Learn about traditional practices for sustainability in different cultures, fostering appreciation for our interconnectedness with nature across borders.
Reflection: Take time to reflect on the significance of Earth Day and the role each person plays in protecting the environment. Discuss how small changes in our daily habits can make a big difference for the planet.
Transdisciplinary Learning: Integrate environmental themes into various subjects, aligning with the interdisciplinary approach of IB. Explore connections between environmental sustainability and subjects like science, geography, literature, and art, providing a holistic understanding of Earth's ecosystems.
By incorporating these IB principles into Earth Day activities, families can instill a deep-seated respect for nature while nurturing international mindedness in children. Together, let's inspire the next generation of environmentally conscious global citizens, committed to safeguarding our planet for the future.
