Hello From Your R10 Social Studies K-12 Consultant

Hello!

Recently, I had the joy of attending and presenting at the annual Texas Social Studies Supervisors Spring Conference in Austin. It is always a pleasure for me to spend time with my fellow Social Studies people. At this year's conference we were blessed to have a keynote presentation by Chassidy Olainu-Alade from Fort Bend ISD where she shared with us a heartbreaking and fascinating look into a current example of why historical research, scholarship and learning are so valuable. If you have not ever heard of it, please take time look up the story of Fort Bend ISD and the Sugarland 95.

In early 2018, as Fort Bend ISD (near Houston) was preparing to break ground on a new CTE high school, an unmarked cemetery was located with the bodies of 95 individuals (94 men and 1 woman). These individuals are believed to be linked to the site's historical use as a sugar plantation that participated in the convict leasing prison system. I found this story meaningful, heartbreaking and oh so very timely. If you would like to learn more, click HERE for a link to Fort Bend ISD's website dedicated to this discovery. In addition, I also recently ran across a similar story coming out of Clearwater, Florida. Click HERE for more information.

Stories like these are just constant reminders of how important it is to tell the whole story of our past and also just how relevant the study of history is to the development of a informed citizenry. There are always new ways to interpret and learn from the past.

Please feel free to share any new resources or gems that you find or know of.

We have some exciting professional development opportunities coming soon. As always, I am always available to help you with resources and would be happy to come out and work with you to support any needs you have. Please follow us on Twitter and sign up for the Social Studies Listserv.
