Principal's Corner

Greetings Boulevard Families,

What an exciting week of learning at Boulevard! Across grade levels, students were actively engaged in meaningful instruction, collaboration, and celebration. Below is a snapshot of the great things happening in our classrooms.

Kindergarten – 100th Day of School Celebration

Our Kindergarteners celebrated the 100th Day of School with rotating, differentiated learning centers. Students composed 100 as ten groups of ten, constructed visual representations of 100, wrote descriptive sentences, and strengthened phonemic awareness and encoding skills during independent writing.

Ohio Learning Standard (Math):
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.K.NBT.A.1 – Compose and decompose numbers from 11 to 19 into ten ones and some further ones (building foundation for place value understanding).

Parent Tip:
At home, ask your child to count objects in groups of 10 (coins, cereal pieces, toys). Reinforce the idea that 100 is 10 groups of 10. You can also encourage them to write a sentence describing a collection of 100 items to strengthen both math and writing skills.

Fourth Grade – Author’s Purpose & Text Evidence

Fourth graders demonstrated a clear focus on identifying author’s purpose (inform, entertain, persuade). Students underlined textual evidence to support their reasoning and engaged in guided questioning to deepen comprehension. The lesson connected to the current Olympic Games, increasing relevance and engagement.

Ohio Learning Standard (ELA):
RL.4.6 / RI.4.6 – Compare and contrast a firsthand and secondhand account of the same event; explain how the author uses reasons and evidence to support particular points.

Parent Tip:
When your child reads at home, ask: Is this text trying to inform, entertain, or persuade? What evidence makes you think that? Encourage them to point directly to words or sentences in the text to justify their thinking.

Fifth Grade – Literary Analysis & Writing Development

Fifth graders engaged in a guided reading lesson using the novel Frindle. Students analyzed character traits, made predictions, identified idioms, and discussed “contrast and contradiction” using “Say Something” strategy cards.

In writing, students participated in timed opinion prompts to build stamina. They practiced self-reflection, peer feedback, and whole-group analysis to strengthen organization, reasoning, and conventions. These activities promoted metacognition and ownership of writing quality.

Ohio Learning Standard (ELA – Reading):
RL.5.1 – Quote accurately from a text when explaining what the text says explicitly and when drawing inferences.

Ohio Learning Standard (ELA – Writing):
W.5.1 – Write opinion pieces supporting a point of view with reasons and information.

Parent Tip:
Ask your child to explain a character’s actions and support their answer with evidence from the book. For writing practice, have them respond to an opinion question and remind them to restate the question, provide two clear reasons, and check for grammar before finishing.

Physical Education – Basketball Skills & Teamwork (Grade 3)

Third graders focused on proper basketball shooting mechanics: body alignment, bending knees, follow-through, and using the backboard. Lessons emphasized teamwork, hustle, and game strategy. Structured team-based competition increased repetition and engagement while reinforcing sportsmanship.

Ohio Learning Standard (Physical Education):
Demonstrates competency in motor skills and movement patterns needed to perform a variety of physical activities.

Parent Tip:
Encourage your child to practice shooting form at home (even without a hoop). Have them bend their knees, align their body, and follow through. Reinforce that effort and hustle matter just as much as making the shot.

Wax Museum & Soul Food Buffet – A Night to Remember

Our Wax Museum and Soul Food Buffet was once again an incredible event. Students brought history to life by sharing their research on Black Americans who have made significant contributions to our nation. They confidently shared the most interesting facts they learned and demonstrated pride in their work.

We also celebrated Boulevard’s youngest published author, Michelle Copeland, alongside her father, Dr. Michael Copeland—what an inspiring moment for our students and families!

A heartfelt thank you to the Boulevard PTA for partnering with us and providing delicious dishes and desserts for our families. Your continued support strengthens our Boulevard community.

Thank you, Boulevard Families, for your partnership in supporting both academic excellence and character development. Each week, our students continue to grow—1 person, 1% better every day.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Every day of school counts. When students attend school regularly, they build strong routines, stay connected to learning, and make steady academic progress. Our goal is to reach a 95% weekly attendance rate in every grade level, K–5, and we can only do this with strong family partnerships.

By ensuring students arrive at school on time and every day, families play a key role in reducing chronic absenteeism and supporting student success. Let’s work together to help every student be present, engaged, and ready to learn—because every minute counts at Boulevard.
