25th Annual Sportsmanship Essay Contest
What Does Good Sportsmanship Look Like From The Stands?
CONTEST THEME:
Spectators play a powerful role in shaping the atmosphere of any athletic event. Their energy, words and actions can inspire athletes, set a positive tone, and demonstrate the true spirit of the game. Whether cheering in the stands or watching from the sidelines, spectators have the opportunity to model good sportsmanship and support all participants with respect and pride.
Let your voice remind us that good sportsmanship is not just for players - it starts in the stands. Help fans understand how their behavior impacts the game and how they can contribute to a positive and respectful environment. In your essay be sure to:
- Define what good sportsmanship means for fans and spectators
- Describe the types of behaviors that reflect positive support (e.g., cheering respectfully, applauding all players, showing appreciation for officials, etc.)
- Explain why these behaviors matter to athletes, coaches and the community
- Offer suggestions or examples of how spectators can lead by example at games
- Utilize feedback shared by attendees of the 30th Annual MIAA Sportsmanship Summit

A Message From
WB's Adjustment Counselor, Mrs. Sullivan & School Psychologist, Dr. Cragin
A Peek Inside The Middle/Senior High School
Teachers and students once again took some time to reflect with their students at the 9/11 Memorial set up at the Police/Fire Station. Our educators feel it’s important to carry on the memories of this moment in US history.
Guest Speaker - Tom Coverly
Students in the middle school, along with the 6th grade had the opportunity to spend an hour with Tom, Coverly, who brought some magic and important messages to students about self respect, caring for others and saying sorry.
Civics
Ms. Martin’s 8th grade Civics students recently connected with the National Constitution Center via Zoom for Civic Stories: Words of the Revolution, an engaging introduction to their next unit on how the U.S. government was formed. Following their Topic 1 assessments (which they did awesome on) on the foundational ideas of government, this interactive session gave students fresh insight into how the American Revolution shaped the nation’s founding principles. This is especially timely as the country prepares to celebrate its 250th anniversary next summer!
Social Studies
Mr. Despier’s grade 7 social studies class is currently working on selecting their National History Day (NHD) groups, topics, and means of presentation. They will solidify their topics and groups over the next two weeks! There will be a showcase/judging event at the school on the ½ day in the second half of the school year! The date of the competition is TBD.
Mr. Ennis’s 10th grade USI students are learning about the American Revolution. In a recent class they learned about the 2nd Continental Congress and were assigned one of the two groups present - Radicals (wanted independence) or Moderates (wanted to stay loyal to England). In pairs they had to debate various topics (John Adams’ Plan, The Olive Branch Petition, Common Sense) from that point of view. It made for interesting and livley debate while reviewing content.
Science
In Mrs. Pope’s Physical Science class, students recently got hands-on with a tasty example of kitchen chemistry by transforming a homogenous mixture of heavy cream into a heterogenous mixture of butter and butter milk. While shaking jars of cream might seem elementary, the process gave students a real-world demonstration of how physical changes can alter mixtures at the particle level. The activity also proved that high schoolers are never too old to have fun with science, especially when it blends learning with a bit of laughter and shaking! By the end, students not only understood the science behind mixtures but also enjoyed the reward of seeing (and tasting) their hard work pay off in the form of freshly made butter.
In Ms. Blye’s engineering plus class, students did a butterfly adaptation project. Students worked to camouflage their butterflies. See if you can find them?
TV Production
Students in Mr. Cray’s Video 4 class resharpened their editing skills after a long summer. They were given raw footage from a short horror film that they have to log and edit into a finished project. Students edit using Final Cut Pro on iMacs that have been funded by the West Bridgewater Cable Advisory Committee. We thank them for their continued support of the video production program.
Art
Mrs. Pereira’s 9th Grade Art 1 Students started submitting their proposals for “The Genius Hour” - this is an opportunity for students to research and learn about an art medium based on students interests. Students will be spending an hour each week to progress their ideas, document their learning process and present their finished works of art around the end of the year. Some topics of interest: Models of military aircraft and ships, whittled wolves, NFL commemorative tokens and scrapbooking to name a few.

A Note from Nurse Diedrichsen
Our district nursing staff is extremely committed to assisting students and families in achieving optimal health in both the school and home setting. We work closely with teachers and other staff members to ensure a healthy and safe educational environment for the students. Our nurses are very approachable and are great resources for both information and health related needs. We invite parents to call with any questions or concerns they may have.
At the beginning of each year our nurses are working diligently to update all health information. Please ensure that you provide all necessary documentation, forms and/or medication promptly so that your student is appropriately cared for! The Annual Health Update Form provided here is so helpful to update the nurse about your student's health status as well as provide authorization for standing order administration if needed.
