Melville students taking care of their Melville School Family

Mae (grade 2) and Riley (K) did a school fundraiser over April vacation. They sold home made bracelets to raise money for the outdoor learning area, which they love! They raised $45 and donated these proceeds to the MPTG. If you see Mae and Riley, be sure to thank them for their efforts.

This week in Art the first graders are finishing up their model magic turtles. In grade 2 we celebrated Earth day and discussed small things that we can do every day to help keep the earth happy. Grade 4 created their own looms and are mastering the art of weaving as they create colorful weaves full of patterns.

Health with Mrs. Powell

Today's lesson focused on the idea of feeling safe. Students named people and places that make them feel safe. Feeling safe is part of being healthy. We also talked about when we don’t feel safe and when we feel afraid or uncomfortable.

Social Emotional Information Social Emotional Information

The Anger Volcano

Anger is not a negative emotion, however it is uncomfortable and can disguise other emotions. The anger volcano is a simple representation of how anger works. Feelings like anxiety and frustration lie under the surface, but they’re often expressed through negative behaviors like fighting or even withdrawing from others (which are associated with the anger emotion).

Check out this visual/resource to help guide conversations about anger and self-control with your child!

Lastly, check out the children’s book, The Anger Volcano by Amanda Greenslade which supports students in self-regulation when their volcano is about to erupt.

Drill Information

Fire drills occur on a regular basis. State law requires each school to conduct eleven fire drills, two lockdown drills and two evacuation drills each year. Shelter in Place drills are conducted throughout the school year. Children are given instruction on all procedures. Children are expected to behave in a calm, orderly manner during these exercises. Please review the importance of such exercises with your child and emphasize the need for appropriate behavior.

A lockdown is an alert to a school community that students and staff should not leave the classroom and should gather in one area of the room until provided with further direction.

An evacuation requires all students and staff to exit the building and meet at a designated safe place.

A shelter in place is an alert to a school community that movement outside of classrooms is being restricted for a brief period of time. It is typically used when a student or staff member is requiring some sort of attention (sometimes medical) and the school is trying to keep that area clear and/or protect that person’s privacy. If there were a serious safety concern the school would not issue a shelter in place.

We will send notification of lockdowns, evacuations, and shelter in place drills and events via email.

Here is the presentation that was shared at a Parent Safety Forum that was hosted in conjunction with the Police and Fire Departments. The Run, Hide, Fight FBI philosophy guides our safety training.

The P3 Sandy Hook Promise Anonymous tip line is a resource that we encourage anyone to use if there is ever an immediate safety concern.

If you are interested in volunteering or chaperoning this school year, then you will need to complete the volunteer approval process. Mrs. McEvoy in our office is a notary and can be of any assistance, so please do not hesitate to reach out!
