Principal's Message
Dear Sycamore Families,
Welcome back to another exciting school year at Sycamore Elementary! We are off to a fantastic start, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to see our students settling into their routines with enthusiasm and a love for learning.
Our halls are buzzing with energy, and it’s clear that our students are ready to learn, lead, and succeed. The first few weeks have been filled with joy, connection, and a strong sense of community.
We’re also excited to announce that our annual PTA Color Run fundraiser kicks off next Monday! This event is not only a fun way to get active but also an important part of supporting enrichment opportunities for our students. Be on the lookout for more information coming home soon.
A big thank you to all the families and grandparents who joined us for our Grandparent’s Luncheon—what a wonderful turnout! The event was such a success that we’ve decided to expand it to two days next year to accommodate everyone and make the celebration even more special.
In addition, our Clubs for All program launched last week, and it has been amazing to see every staff member involved and every student engaged. These clubs offer unique opportunities for students to Finally, some additional exciting news! GCPS is working to provide a School Resource Officer at each elementary school. I'm excited to share that Sycamore has been selected as one of the elementary schools gaining a School Resource Officer this year! Our SRO will be here daily, making positive connections with students and staff. Once we have received official notification on whom will be joining us and when, I will share that information.
Families, we look forward to the many memories we’ll create together this year and appreciate your continued partnership in helping our students thrive. Here’s to a year filled with growth, learning, and joy!
As always, if I can be of any assistance, my door is always open.
Your proud principal,
Dr. Kelly Scarborough

PBIS
Let’s celebrate! Sycamore Elementary School was named a PBIS Distinguished School by the Georgia Department of Education for the 2024-2025 school year! This recognition reflects the hard work, commitment, and intentional focus that Sycamore’s staff has placed on building a positive school culture and climate. Together, we are building safe, supportive, and thriving learning environments for all students.
Read below for testimonies from some of our 4th grade students sharing why they like PBIS here at Sycamore Elementary School as they shopped our mobile PBIS store!
“I like PBIS because it lets us get rewards and helps us set goals to be better students at Sycamore.”-Charly Harrison
“I like PBIS because when you do good you can get prizes and fun stuff to play with at home. - Issac Rudolph
“I like PBIS because it helps to students to shoe the 3 R’s, Ready, Respectful, Responsible so they can earn tickets for the store.”-Victoria Orozco
Safety & Security
We conducted 2 successful Fire Drill in August in which students were able to practice exiting the building in the event of an emergency. Our next Fire Drill will be next week. We have two student members of the safety team who will serve as obstacles during the drill which will force a small population of teachers and students to think fast and find another exit route. This is great practice for everyone.
Additionally, we will have our first Hard Lock Down Drill on September 17th which involves our School Resource Officers (SRO). We conduct these drills once per semester.
Parent Engagement
On September 11th, Ms. Schmitt, Ms. Mantilla, and Ms. Castro presented information about the Parent Center and the Importance of Student attendance. Parents were informed on how attendance impacts a student's ability to succeed academically. Parents also learned about strategies and resources that can be utilized through the Parent Center to encourage children of all ages to practice good school attendance.
On Wednesday, September 17th, Ms. Adames, Ms. Schmitt, and Ms. Mantilla will share information about Parent online and media resources, as well as Sycamore's Annual Title I Parent Meeting. Parents will have the opportunity to explore learning platforms in order to support their child at home. Title I at Sycamore Elementary supports student success by funding extra programs, instructional materials, and family engagement activities.
Together, we are building strong foundations for lifelong learning!
