📚✨Reading Together: The Single Best Habit for Your Child’s Success

As we work toward our district-wide strategic priority of improving literacy achievement for every student, I want to share one of the most powerful—and rewarding—ways you can support your child’s growth: reading together every day! 📖❤️

Taking just 10 to 15 minutes each day to read to or with your child makes a profound difference. Research consistently shows that children who are read to on a regular basis gain reading skills more quickly, develop stronger comprehension, and cultivate a lifelong love for reading. Spending this time together helps children build a rich vocabulary and expand their background knowledge across all subjects, giving them a strong foundation for academic success.

This isn't just for our youngest learners, either—older students still love being read to! It gives them a chance to engage with more complex stories, discuss big ideas, and unwind after a busy day.

Simple Ways to Fit Reading into Your Daily Routine ⏰

  • Pair Reading with Daily Routines: Read a chapter aloud during breakfast 🥣, listen to an audiobook together on the drive to school or practice 🚗, or keep a quiet reading wind-down right before bedtime 🌙.
  • Take Turns Reading: Try "echo reading" (you read a sentence, they repeat it) or split the page—you read one paragraph, and your child reads the next 🔁.
  • Explore Beyond Books: Magazines 📰, comic books 🦸‍♂️, cookbooks while baking together 🍪, or graphic novels all count as valuable reading time!
  • Make It Interactive: Pause to ask open-ended questions like, "What do you think will happen next?" or "Why do you think that character made that choice?" ❓💭

By finding small, creative moments to share a book each day, you are actively helping your child thrive. Thank you for partnering with us to build a strong community of readers!
