State Team Updates

Updates from the state team are in regular text, while my additional notes are italicized:

  • Grade 5 Unit 8 Update: Research standards and performance assessments are removed from Unit 8 and placed in *NEW* Grade 5 Unit 9: Making Meaning Through Research. Unit 8 performance assessments have been revised to address cross-genre reading and writing. Unit 9 performance assessments involve the research process. This restructuring allows students to have additional time with the Making Meaning with Genres unit prior to the testing window, ensuring teachers can address cross-curricular reading and writing content before the STAAR exam. Non-tested research standards are moved to a 15-day stand-alone unit that occurs after the testing window.

If you are worried about squeezing in a STAAR review into the YAG, please note that the "Across Genres" unit serves as a cross-curricular STAAR review for all grades. The team's suggestion is to ensure you have started (not finished) this unit by STAAR.

  • Grades 3-5: Fall Semester PA Revision to clarify student products, process, and expectations (Backwards Design doc & IFD)

If you have attended my planning sessions this is very similar to what we have already been doing...now it's just written into the PA! Other grade levels will be updated in the future.

Pacing Tool Revisions (3rd-5th Grade ELAR)

Pacing tools for 3rd-5th grade ELAR have been posted to ITRS and are current up to and for:

  • Third Grade Unit 3B
  • Fourth Grade Unit 3B
  • Fifth Grade Unit 3B

As you review/implement these tools, please keep in mind that every pacing tool has a feedback form. If there is anything that you feel needs to be revised please utilize the grade-level band feedback forms found below:

  • Kindergarten-Eighth Grade
  • English I-IV

Thank you to those who have already let me know of corrections that need to be made! We appreciate any and all feedback!

Resource of the Month

Each month I will be highlighting a different TRS resource. I encourage you to try it out and post the implementation of it on Twitter!

Are you currently using this resource....or is it brand new to you? I would love to see how it is going! Post a tweet and make sure to tag me (@CGrayR10) and our new curriculum page @R10CSS.

What is it: Phonics Scope and Sequence (K-5) functions as a mini YAG to display individual units' phonics skills.

How could I use it: It's possible that your district, campus, or LEA has adopted a different phonics program with its own unique scope and sequence, which may differ from what's provided in TRS. However, even if you are following an independent phonics program, you can still integrate this tool into your planning and instruction. The TRS state team has provided detailed 'examples' and 'notes' for individual phonics TEKS. You can utilize it to fine-tune your instruction, ensure alignment with state standards, and clarify any unfamiliar terminology.

Where do I find it: Start at Resources Folder ➜Planning Tools Subfolder ➜ ELAR Grade __ Phonics Scope and Sequence

What could I tweet:

  • Reflections on using the document as a team/individually

Did you use the STAAR analysis documents from last month's Smore? If so, tweet it out and share your reflections!

Mapping Out Instruction with TRS

During this session, ELAR teachers planning with TRS from across the Region will come together to plan for the second six/nine weeks of instruction to ease the first weeks of school. During the first part of our day, participants will go through TRS documents and identify how to utilize them in the planning process, work on unpacking performance assessments, and explore how ITRS can help us include these in our instructional units. During the second part of our day, participants will begin planning out daily instruction!

  • November 8th from 8:30-3:30
  • January 16th from 8:30-3:30
  • March 27th from 8:30-3:30

Write Right in K-2 with TRS

What should writing look like in my classroom? What are instructional best practices I can implement alongside my PAs? Come explore all this and more as we find out how interactive read-alouds, mentor texts, and an understanding of the developmental stages of writing can set our young authors up for success!

  • February 20th from 8:30-3:30
