💭 Superintendent's Message
Dear Northfield Public Schools Families:
I hope this message finds you well. I am grateful for our continued partnership to prepare every student for lifelong success by developing critical thinkers who are curious and ready to engage in our society.
Reading well is foundational to students' preparation for lifelong success. At the March 9 board meeting, District Literacy Specialist Alisha Clarey gave an update on literacy instruction and the district’s progress toward implementing the READ Act.
We have been diligent in ensuring staff have the latest training in the Science of Reading to guide their instruction:
Phase 1: 134 staff completed Phase 1 Science of Reading Training (LETRS or OL&LA)
Educational Assistant training: 92 staff completed the required 2025-2026 Paraprofessional Training.
Phase 2: 17 secondary staff will complete Phase 2 Science of Reading Training with Strive during the 2026-2027 school year.
She also shared data from the district’s winter benchmarking tests and how our exceptional teachers are using that information to adapt their instruction for all students.
You can watch the presentation here.
The Northfield School District is dedicated to academic excellence, and our commitment to high-quality reading instruction is one of the main ways we demonstrate that dedication.
As always, feel free to contact me with any questions or feedback about the district.
Sincerely,
Matt

🔎 Superintendent Search Update
The school board met on Friday, March 6, 2026 to plan the superintendent search, set the hiring criteria, and develop the superintendent search timeline. A webpage has been created on the district’s website to keep the community informed about the process.
Applications for the position are due April 7, after which the board will hold a special meeting on Thursday, April 16 to determine the finalists. The first round of interviews will be held Friday, April 24 at 4:00 p.m. and continue at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 25, with the final round of interviews taking place on Wednesday, April 29, starting at 4:00 p.m.
Here are two ways you can engage in the search process:
2. Participate in a virtual Q&A Zoom session, where MSBA will answer questions about the search. This Zoom session will be held Friday, March 13, 2026 at 4:00 p.m. Questions about the search process can be submitted anonymously in advance, or they can also be submitted using the chat box during the session. This session will also be recorded and posted to the district’s website at a later date. (Please submit your questions by Friday, March 13 at noon).
🏛️ MASA/MSBA Day at the Capitol
On Monday, March 9, I led a group of two school board members, community members, and high school students to St. Paul for the MSBA/MASA Day at the Capitol.
During the event, we heard from four leaders of the Education Policy Committees and met with Representative Kristi Pursell and Senator Bill Lieske to advocate for our public schools. We also observed some of the Senate Education Policy Committee hearings.
We have a robust legislative action committee that meets via Google Meet twice per month. I invite you to participate on the team — sign up by emailing Kelly Spillman-Kramer, kspillmankramer@northfieldschools.org.
📊 Reminder: Operating Levy Renewal Public Hearing March 19
Northfield Public Schools encourages district residents to attend a public hearing on Thursday, March 19, 2026 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. in the Northfield District Office Gymnasium to learn more and provide feedback on the board renewal of the 2017 operating levy. Here are the details:
Date: Thursday, March 19, 2026
Time: 6:00-8:00 p.m.
Location: Northfield District Office Gymnasium, 201 Orchard Street South. Enter through door 5 on the parking lot side of the building.
The Northfield School District Board of Education is in the process of considering the renewal of its 2017 operating levy, which is set to expire at the end of fiscal year 2028 and represents approximately $9 million of the district’s annual revenue.
The board has the option to renew our existing operating levy, which is set to expire in 2028, one time under the same conditions originally approved by the voters, as permitted by Minnesota Statute 126C.17, subdivision 9b.
Why is the board considering renewing the operating levy now?
The levy expires at the end of FY28 and represents approximately $9 million or 13% of our revenue.
Renewing the operating levy by board resolution, as permitted by statute, would provide fiscal stability.
We are in the allowable statutory timeframe for the board to renew the operating levy.
Why was the statute changed to allow boards to renew operating levies by resolution?
The Minnesota Legislature made the change in 2023. Data showed that nearly all operating levy renewal election questions were approved by voters. The Legislature recognized the effort and cost associated with school operating levy elections and provided this option for school boards to renew an operating levy one time using the same conditions as originally approved by the voters.
The statutory authority allows the board to renew the operating levy for:
“The same as the amount expiring, or for an expiring referendum that was adjusted annually by the rate of inflation, the same as the per pupil amount of the expiring referendum, adjusted annually for inflation in the same manner as if the expiring referendum had continued.”
For the Northfield School District, this would mean renewing it at the existing per pupil amount for fiscal year 2026-27 ($2,249.44 per pupil) with the annual inflationary increase added each year.“The term of the renewed referendum is no longer than the initial term approved by the voters.”
For the Northfield School District, this would mean renewing the operating levy for another ten years.
You can view the full operating levy board renewal timeline here.
📝 Raider Image refresh
Northfield's RALIE student leadership group has conducted an extensive process to refresh the image of the Northfield Raiders. Over 30 submissions were received from students, staff, and community members. A student committee narrowed the options to two images (shown above).
You can watch the student presentation to the school board on Monday, March 9 here.
You can view a copy of their slide deck here.
You can offer your feedback on which finalist should be the new image representing Raider Nation. We are proud of our RALIE students who did an exceptional job of leading this process! You can submit your feedback through April 7 at 11:59 pm.
📸 Artist in Residence at Northfield Middle School
For the past two weeks, eighth grade art classes at Northfield Middle School worked with an Artist-in-Residence named Wing Young Huie. Wing is a renowned photographer who has published eight books, exhibited work worldwide, and is the recipient of the 2018 McKnight Distinguished Artist Award. It was an incredible honor to have him at the middle school. Students not only learned about photography, but they also learned more about themselves, their classmates and the world through this workshop. We are incredibly grateful to the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council for the generous grant that allowed Wing to be here. This workshop experience will culminate in an exhibition of student’s photographs in Northfield later this spring.

📚SELBH Update: As Clear as A, B, C and 1, 2, 3
Northfield Public Schools continues to strengthen our districtwide work in Social-Emotional Learning and Behavioral Health (SELBH). Our district vision reminds us that we prepare every student for lifelong success by developing critical thinkers who are curious and ready to engage in our society. We also recognize that social-emotional learning is foundational to creating the optimal conditions for learning. When students feel safe, connected, and supported, they are better able to engage, persist, and grow academically.
Over the past year, a representative group of district stakeholders has been leading the work to clarify a shared vision and set of beliefs about how schools support the whole person development. At the heart of this work is a simple idea; when schools and families work together with consistency and shared purpose, students thrive.
You may hear us describe SELBH as being “as clear as A, B, C and 1, 2, 3.” In this model, families and caregivers, educators, and students all play an important role. When families and schools work in partnership, the result is stronger relationships, improved well-being, and greater student success.
Our framework is grounded in the CASEL model of social-emotional learning, which helps students develop essential life skills such as understanding and managing emotions, building healthy relationships, showing empathy, and making responsible decisions.
This spring, a designated group of Pre-K - 12th teachers are piloting SEL curriculum to determine which resources best support students and staff. Feedback from these pilots will help inform future decisions about instructional materials and supports.
SELBH is ultimately about creating schools where every student feels safe, connected, and ready to learn. Through strong partnerships with families and our community, we are building the conditions that help every student belong, grow, and succeed.
Any questions about SELBH can be directed to Instructional Systems: MTSS Coach Shane Baier, sbaier@northfieldschools.org.
