Reminder - GVS is a NO Idling campus.
Reminder - GVS is a NO Idling campus. At GVS your child's safety is one of our top priorities. We know it's cold out there, but please be respectful of the signage regarding NO idling while in the car line for pick-up and drop-off. New Hampshire law (RSA 200:48) requires school districts to implement policies that minimize or eliminate vehicle idling on school grounds to protect air quality. Just as a friendly reminder, the car line begins dismissing at 3:10 p.m.
Poetry Phone
The 5/6 grade tech team has finished their major project for the year - an old manual telephone that has been converted to a "poetry phone" using an arduino with an SD Card and built-in mp3 player. Pick up the receiver, you receive a greeting prompting you to press a number on the keypad, which selects one of 9 readings of a poem from Shel Silverstein's "Where the Sidewalk Ends". The poems can be swapped out by changing the files on the SD card, so the phone will hopefully become a fixture in the GVS Library.
Upcoming Events and Activities
- February 16 - Holiday - No school
- February 18 - K-3 Music Concert 6pm
- February 23 - 27 vacation
26-27 Preschool
Do you have a child who will be eligible for preschool during the 2026-2027 school year?
The GVS Preschool has two classes. Students who turn 3 on or before September 30th are eligible for the morning class. Students who turn 4 on or before September 30th are eligible for the afternoon class. Spaces are limited so we use a lottery system. Complete the google form below and you will be added to our interest list. We will begin screening registration in February. Our screening date is March 27, 2026.
Current PK students do NOT need to complete the form.

State Testing Letter
February 6, 2026
Dear Grantham Village School Parent/Guardian,
Each year, New Hampshire public and chartered public schools are required by state law (RSA 193-C) and federal accountability laws (Every Student Succeeds Act) to assess students using a standardized assessment. These assessments help evaluate student progress and guide instruction. To learn more, visit the New Hampshire Department of Education’s Office of Assessment webpage.
At Grantham Village School students in grades 3 through 6 will participate in the English Language Arts (Reading and Writing) and Mathematics assessments. Our 5th grade students will also be assessed in Science. Grantham Village School will administer these assessments in May. It is beneficial if you try to avoid scheduling appointments or vacations during the testing dates. Please make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and good breakfast, prior to testing. Let us know if your child will not be here on the scheduled testing date as we need to arrange for a makeup time.
Statewide assessments are an important part of a student’s core educational program. They measure student mastery of core academic skills, inform classroom instruction, and support learning recovery. In addition to classroom assignments, projects, essays, and local formative and summative assessments, statewide summative assessment results provide teachers and parents with valuable insight into students’ progress on their path toward academic success.
Average Testing Times Grades 3-6:
English Language Arts/Reading: 60-75 minutes
Writing: 60-75 minutes
Mathematics: 60-75 minutes
Science (Grade 5 only): 60-75 minutes
Parents may access NH SAS practice tests by going to the NH SAS assessment portal at: Students and Families. Results of the assessments are typically available shortly after a student completes the test. Parents can view test results through the Family Portal using an access code. Please contact us to obtain one. We will also send individual reports home when they become available. While state testing is not our only focus, it is an indicator of your child’s progress and the school’s effectiveness in general. A parent / guardian can request an exemption for the assessment, by contacting Kristen Reed to request an exemption form. The form must be completed and submitted prior to the start of the assessment dates. However, it should be noted that a parental request for exemption does result in the school receiving a zero for that student. We are required to have at least 95% of students in grades 3-6 complete the assessment. If you have any questions related to the assessment administration, you may contact our School Counselor, Kris Widmann. Thank you for supporting your student! Sincerely, Kristen Reed, School Principal Kris Widmann, School Counselor

Math Facts as a Super Power!
In previous newsletters, we discussed the importance of knowing math facts. It is incredibly important, but did you know that it can be a super power too?!?!
Here are 2 ways that knowing your math facts is a super power!
1. Fluency Builds "Number Sense"
Fluency is the first step toward truly "speaking" the language of math. It allows students to play with numbers rather than just crunching them.
The Difference: A fluent student doesn't just see 15 - 7, they see an opportunity to use a strategy like 15 - 5 - 2.
The Result: Students start thinking like mathematicians, seeing patterns and relationships instead of just symbols on a page. Stronger number sense makes math easier and helps students solve problems quicker.
2. Automatic Recall Unlocks Brainpower
Think of "Working Memory" like a desk. If the desk is covered in basic addition and multiplication problems, there’s no room for the big, complex projects.
Free Up Space: When 6 X 7 is automatic, the brain has the "mental real estate" to focus on multi-step word problems.
Shift the Focus: Students move from asking "What is the answer?" to "What does this answer actually mean?"

A message from our School Nurse, Mrs. Carey:
Dear Parents, Guardians, and Kids,
We hope you're having a blast with your Passport to Winter Fun and getting outside this winter!
As the days get longer and the season rolls on, we wanted to remind you how the prize system works. For every 10, 20, and 30 days that your child is active for at least 1 hour, they can claim prizes from participating businesses! Just take your passport to the business listed on the prize sheet. Once they verify your child has reached the 10, 20, and/or 30-day milestones in the booklet, they'll sign it and you're free to enjoy the prize—easy as that!
IMPORTANT: Front Flap Deadline is February 13th!
If you haven't filled out the Front Flap yet, now's the time! This is the data that helps us prove the program's impact to funders and secure grants to keep Passport to Winter Fun free and growing every year. Without these numbers, we can't sustain or expand the program—so it really matters.
You can:
- Turn it in to your child's school
- Mail it to: UVTA's Passport to Winter Fun, P.O. Box 1215, Norwich, VT 05055
- Or even easier: Scan the QR code in your booklet to complete the form online
BONUS: Every front flap we receive gets entered into a special raffle to win 2 Killington lift vouchers to use THIS winter!
