August 18-24, 2024

Good morning, Cannon families,

We had a GREAT first week with our Cubs! Thank you for sending your scholars to school on time and for following all of our safety arrival and dismissal procedures. Our current School Resource Officer (SRO), Sergeant Bobby Smith, was very impressed with our established safety protocols. He would like me to remind you that it is against the law to be on your cell phone in a school zone, so please put down those phones in our car line.

Our staff are hard at work setting our routines and procedures so that all of our scholars show Cub PRIDE (Partnership, Respect, Integrity, Dependability, and Empathy) each and everyday! We will be ready to invite our Skyward approved lunch visitors to enjoy lunch with their Cub starting the week of Labor Day (September 3-6). Please continue to remind your Cub to be make strong choices as we cultivate a strong learning environment at Cannon.

A huge THANK YOU to our FABULOUS FRIDAY DADS for helping us welcome our Cubs! Every Friday is spirit day, and our Cannon Dads Club are always looking for more dads to jump in and support our arrival procedures!

Friday was Safety Day with Ms. Bailey ~ Standard Response Protocols

In GCISD, the safety and security of our students and staff are our top priority. We have partnered with the I Love You Guys Foundation to implement Standard Response Protocols, or as we called them, Ss, that are used in emergency situations.

Emergency personnel in Colleyville, Euless and Grapevine work in partnership with GCISD to ensure we keep all students and staff safe. In this video, members of these emergency services and GCISD staff help explain each SRP and its function in keeping students and staff safe. Learn more about GCISD's Security and Emergency Management by clicking here.

  • Each campus conducts drills throughout the school year. These drills are based on the Standard Response Protocols of Secure, Lockdown, Evacuate, Shelter, and Hold. GCISD developed one additional protocol known as Clear.

  • Completion of the drills is mandatory for each campus during the first two weeks of school, so that students and staff are prepared. Drills help us learn and know how to respond in the case of a real emergency at school. Our drills also help us to check certain equipment and responses. Our emergency management leaders on each campus will work with students and staff to complete our drills and document the results.

  • Your child's classroom has a SRP Poster displayed. We will be discussing these and practicing these drills the next two weeks of school. More information about Safety and Security in GCISD can be found at https://www.gcisd.net/page/security-emergency-mgmt

  • When any visitor comes to campus, he or she will need to bring and present their driver's license to be scanned in our system in order to be admitted onto the campus. Also, our door to the office will be locked, and Mrs. Esparza or Mrs. COx will be conducting a visual check before unlocking the door.

If you have any questions, GCISD Director of Emergency Management and School Security, Allen Smith, is very receptive to speaking with parents about our safety practices and may be reached at allen.smith@gcisd.net.

We need ALL of our Cannon community to participate in our Parent Teacher Association (PTA) Calendar Fundraiser. It's simple - Pick a Day and Pay that Amount! You can select a day (or more). We need to fill up a calendar for each classroom teacher, specials teacher, and our special services teachers. We know our public schools need our help - The aim of our PTA is to fundraise sufficient funds to support our teachers and our Cubs. Prizes will be awarded to each grade-level reaching our $2,000 goal and the top earning class in each grade level will also receive a prize! Our PTA must fundraise to create a budget to support our school. Our PTA does so much for our students, but without a budget we will not be able to fulfill and support our school needs.

Trustees Lower Tax Rate, Call Voter-Approved Tax Ratification Election for November Ballot

At its August 12 Special Meeting, the Grapevine-Colleyville ISD Board of Trustees voted unanimously to call a voter-approved tax ratification election (VATRE) that will be on the November 5 ballot. Trustees also approved the 2024 tax rate, and even with the three additional golden pennies from the passage of the VATRE, the total overall tax rate (Maintenance and Operations, plus Interest and Sinking) will be lowered by $0.0014.

GCISD officials will schedule informational meetings about the VATRE to share details and answer questions. As soon as those meetings are finalized, information will be shared through the district’s regular communication channels. In the meantime, residents are encouraged to visit www.GCISD.net/VATRE for more information.
