February 2026 Newsletter
Hello Families,
Welcome to the February edition of the Kellogg School District Family Newsletter! We kicked off the second semester on January 26h and we're excited for the learning and growth that lies ahead for our students. Although the winter weather has been kind to us so far, there's always chance we can still see some snow and ice so please make sure your children are dressed for the conditions. We also hope to see enough snow that the KMS ski club can get their trips in this season.
This semester is also buzzing with activity on the sports fields and courts! We're thrilled to cheer on our middle school basketball teams, high school basketball teams, and high school wrestlers as they compete. Be sure to check the school calendar for game schedules and come out to show your support! GO WILDCATS!
Included in this month's newsletter are some links to helpful information about the district and resources that our families may not know about. Make sure to bookmark these sites or download the district mobile app!
๐ถ The KSD Therapy Dog Family is Growing ๐ถ
Trainers Nick Parke & Alicia Hall proudly placed our fifth therapy dog within the Kellogg School District!
Starting February 2nd, Dougie will be full-time at Canyon Elementary, and we couldnโt be more proud or excited to see all the incredible things he will do in his career with his mom by his side!
This milestone is especially bittersweet when we remember how it all began.
In February of 2023, we received a call from one of our rescue partners about a doodle sibling pair that had just been saved from a heartbreaking situation. They were extremely emaciated, physically abused, scaredโฆ yet still greeted the world with wagging tails and a glimmer of hope in their eyes.
Snickers & Poppy became the pioneers of this entire program, showing kids that even after the hardest chapters in life, there is always a brighter side. Since then, weโve added three more therapy dog teams to our program!
This summer, Kellogg Middle School welcomed Murphy, bringing his famous Murphy love and his infamous โSquishโ to students. Whenever Murphy walks into a room there is always an abundance of smiles & laughter. And this fall, we added Dougie (Canyon Elementary) and little Chip-( Pinehurst Elementary) to the team!
These dogs are all task trained and are utilized as de escalation tools for upset or escalated students. The handlers are trained on how to work with the dogs and students. And we do regular check ins with our teams. Seeing the profound impact these dogs have had on our schools and communities has been amazing!
Congratulations, KSD and Canyon Elementary!
We are so excited for this next chapter for Dougie and his mom as well as all the lives heโs about to touch.

๐ KSD Funding Facts ๐
January 28, 2026 - KSD Board of Trustees Budget Workshop was held at Kellogg Middle School which was attended by 53 patrons, including community members and school district staff. Board Chair Alexa Griffin led a discussion focused on the impending changes that will affect all levels and departments of the district if a supplemental levy is not in place for the 26-27 and 27-28 school years. She shared that the district administration team has been working to identify programs and positions that will need to be eliminated due to the reduction in funding. Topics discussed and questions asked covered school funding formulas including state funding based on average daily attendance and how the state determines how much funding the district should get. When ADA is calculated, the district will only receive a portion of their designated funds. As stated previously, the Kellogg School District is currently funded for 59 certified teaching positions so a reduction of 12 certified staff will be necessary. The administration has identified 63 classified positions that the district does not receive funding for, as well as an administrator position. The supplemental levy funds full day kindergarten so that is program that will likely change to 1/2 day if the levy is not in place. Numerous bus routes will be either consolidated or eliminated due to lack of funding, as well as drastic changes to the athletics programs at Kellogg Middle and High Schools. Board Chair Griffin also stated that the district may explore fee increases for student athletes in order to continue offering athletic activities. Facility use fees will be put in place for community groups utilizing district facilities in order to offset costs for custodial services and utilities. Many questions were asked about the districts plan for communicating these budgetary adjustments to the community. The district will be sharing more about the programs and positions that cannot be funded without a supplemental levy in place during the March-May time period. The trustees encouraged those present to engage with members of the community and share information about the levy and it's impact on the district.
