MVHS, Explained | Episode 11: Talking With Your Student About School
Getting your high school student to talk about their day can sometimes feel like a challenge. Asking "How was school?" often leads to a quick "fine" or "good," leaving families wondering how to start more meaningful conversations.
In this episode of MVHS, Explained, we share practical conversation starters and strategies to help families move beyond simple yes-or-no questions. Learn how to ask questions that encourage students to reflect on their learning, friendships, challenges, and successes while building stronger communication at home.
The goal isn't to ask more questions. It's to ask better questions that open the door to meaningful conversations.

Family and Community Climate and Culture Survey
We want to hear from our families and community members about how we are doing, both from an individual school perspective and throughout the entire district.
Please take a few minutes to give us this important feedback!
Learn more or complete the survey: https://www.tsd.org/climate-and-culture
The survey closes on November 13th
Student Climate and Culture Survey
In order to learn more about student experiences at school, we ask students in grades 3-12 to participate in an online survey. The survey content asks students to self-reflect on emotional regulation, social awareness, growth mindset, perseverance, sense of belonging, school safety, and teacher-student relationships.
Your student will be invited to participate in the full online survey during regular school hours at the end of October. When the survey is introduced, students will be invited to participate and informed that they do not have to answer any questions they do not wish to answer. The full survey should take no more than 20-30 minutes to complete.
In addition to this full survey, students will also have opportunities throughout the year to take shorter, more frequent surveys called Check-ins. These Check-ins will take just a few minutes to complete and will use questions drawn from and aligned to the full survey. This will provide timely feedback on how students are feeling and engaging in their learning. The information gathered from Check-ins will help school staff provide more immediate and responsive support for students.
You can review survey questions here: Grades 3-5 SEL Competencies Survey, Grades 6-12 SEL Competencies Survey, Grades 3-5 Supports & Environments Survey, Grades 6-12 Supports & Environments Survey
Student responses to both the full survey and Check-ins will follow our district’s expectations for maintaining confidentiality for your student. Our third-party vendor, Panorama, has signed the district's data privacy agreement to ensure all required online encryption protocols are followed.
Parents/guardians have already provided your consent or opt-out through online registration or annual family update; if you have any questions, please contact our Librarian, Jennifer Bass, with any questions. jennifer.bass@tsd.org

Protect Your Student’s Chromebook with Safeware Insurance
Accidents happen. For $25–$36 per year, depending on the Chromebook model, families can purchase Safeware Chromebook insurance to help cover accidental damage such as cracked screens, drops, and liquid spills. Covered repairs have no deductibles or service fees.
How it works
Purchase coverage from Safeware using district ID DIST0132
If damage happens, there is no claim for families to file
Bring the Chromebook to the library at your student’s school
TSD works directly with Safeware to handle the repair
Without insurance, repair costs can add up quickly, and full device replacement may cost $200–$300. Learn more about repair costs on TSD’s website.
Safeware does not cover lost devices or deliberate damage.
