MESSAGE FROM MS JOANNA MESSAGE FROM MS JOANNA

Dear PS 107 Families,

I hope this message finds you well as we move deeper into November — a month full of gratitude, giving, and reflection.

Aid + Action Committee Launches Food Security Efforts

Under the leadership of parents Julie Mee Schmidt and Tyghe Trimble, PS 107’s Aid + Action Committee has jumped into action to support families in our own community who may be facing food insecurity, as well as families in the neighboring PS 124 community.

With the federal government shutdown having far-reaching effects, our community is coming together to help one another. Aid + Action is launching two major efforts:

  • Setting up a food pantry at PS 107, and

  • Donating 100 bags of groceries to families at nearby PS 124.

Two of our classrooms — 3-208 (Kai Hollander-Malys) and 3-206 (Reham Refai and Kaleigh Rohner) — are partnering with the Aid + Action Committee to help lead this work.

If your family can donate, please send in items listed on the flyer pictured on the right.

If your family needs support, please reach out to your child’s teacher, or contact:

  • Nadia Benlarbi, Parent Coordinator – nbenlarbi2@schools.nyc.gov

  • Colleen Dondero, School Social Worker – cdondero3@schools.nyc.gov

We are also collecting gift cards to local grocery stores, which will be distributed to families in need. Gift card donations can be dropped off with Nadia in the main office.

Thank you, as always, for your generosity and compassion — these acts make PS 107 such a remarkable community.

Native American Heritage Month

This month, PS 107 is proud to celebrate Native American Heritage Month.

Please take a moment to see the beautiful bulletin board in the front hallway — designed and created by parent Rebecca Jacobs — honoring the rich cultures, histories, and contributions of Native Americans.

Throughout November, our students are hearing morning announcements highlighting Native Americans who have made a lasting impact on the United States, and teachers have received recommended read-alouds and discussion prompts to help guide classroom learning and reflection.

Honoring Our Veterans

Thank you to all of the veterans in our community who were recognized yesterday on Veterans Day. We are deeply grateful for your service and for the sacrifices you’ve made in support of our country and our freedoms.

Bundle Up, PS 107!

The weather finally matches the month — it’s chilly out there! Please remember to send your children to school with warm clothing, including hats, gloves, and scarves as needed.

We go outside for recess every day, unless it’s raining heavily or bitterly cold. And please be sure to label all outerwear with your child’s name and class; this helps us return items that inevitably go missing during the day.

Safe Walking Reminder

Our Crossing Guards have brought to our attention that some students who walk home independently are not crossing at traffic lights or are ignoring walk/don’t walk signals.

If your child walks home on their own, please take a moment to remind them about the importance of pedestrian safety — crossing only at corners, waiting for the signal to change, and staying alert to their surroundings.

We appreciate your help reinforcing these habits so all of our students can stay safe on their way to and from school.

Upcoming Safety Drills

We will conduct our fifth of six Evacuation (Fire) Drills during the week of November 17th.

To learn more about NYC Public Schools emergency-readiness protocols, please visit here.

Still Collecting Candy for Our Staff!

Taking a trip to Costco or stopping by the grocery store? Pick up a bulk bag of candy for our hardworking staff! We keep our staff break room stocked with sweet treats to brighten their days.

Please leave donations with Nadia in the main office. Thank you for helping to keep the sugar (and morale!) flowing at PS 107.

As we move through this season of gratitude, I continue to be inspired by the kindness and generosity that define our community — from caring for one another through Aid + Action to reminding our children how to stay safe and mindful in the world around them. Thank you for being such active partners in all that makes PS 107 special.

Warmly,

Ms. Joanna

FUNDRAISERS

ANNUAL FUND

Contribute to the Annual Fund, which directly supports essential school programs and resources. Here’s how:

  • Make a one-time or monthly donation online via Konstella by clicking here.

  • Share this public link with non-Konstella users (e.g. extended family and friends).

  • Make a gift of stock here.

  • Find out if your employer offers a matching gift program - if so, taking the extra step to secure a corporate match makes a huge difference!

Why support the Annual Fund?

PS 107 relies on PTA support to supplement DOE funding, which consistently falls short of what's needed. This partnership between families and the school makes possible important programs sch as Art and Science, as well as supplies, curriculum materials, extra classroom support, and so much more. THANK YOU in advance for your contribution! Please contact PS 107 parent Betsy Goldfarb with any questions about the Annual Fund: betsy@ps107.org.

Our goal is to support all our classrooms with the sensory tools our students need, beginning with our ICT classrooms. Tools requested are including but not limited to: flexible seating, noise-cancelling headphones, writing support tools, desk bands. See the wishlists here, on Konstella.

A few grades may also have openings for Book Club Leads (or co-leads) to help plan and host their grade’s monthly book club gatherings. Each pin represents a different type of service:

  • Clothing Drive Pin

  • Action Volunteer Pin

Earning all three pins designates you an official 'Aid and Action Ambassador' and secures your fourth, commemorative pin -- so stay on the lookout for opportunities to volunteer and you can collect them all!
