Dear OPR Families,
The OPR Student Council is proud to be sponsoring the 4th annual OPR Talent Show: The Stars of OPR on Thursday night at 6:00 at the Walpole High School Auditorium. The event is free for the whole family. We have 48 acts of talented students in grades K through 5 who will be performing. I hope you'll be able to join us!
Students who are performing should arrive by 5:45 and come to the stage to be directed to their seats with their fellow performers. Student Council emcees and crew should arrive by 5:45 and see me.
The dress rehearsal for performers, crew, and emcees will be on Tuesday, March 19th at 3:00-4:30 in the OPR Cafeteria. Students will be allowed to use the phone to call for a ride home after they perform. All students should be done by 4:30. If you have any questions, email or call the OPR office.

Art with Ms. Kroll
Grade K:
Kindergarten artists have been studying the Element of Art: Color and were introduced to primary and secondary colors. Each student learned how to mix colors to create new ones using tempera cakes in only the primary colors. We will be creating Kandinsky-inspired masterpieces that feature a grid-like series of concentric circles to showcase students’ new ability to mix colors in abstract paintings.
Grade 1:
Students have been learning about the Element of Art: Color and reviewed what the primary and secondary colors are. First grade artists studied the difference between abstract and realistic art by comparing paintings made by our featured artist, Kandinsky. For the masterpiece, students made a circle print composition with black acrylic paint and cardboard tubes after which they will add watercolor.
Grade 2:
Students are working with the Element of Art: Color and learned about what warm and cool colors are. They reviewed the basics of primary and secondary colors with Scratch Garden’s “Color Song,” which is a schoolwide favorite! Second grade artists were introduced to the new art medium of watercolor oil pastels and practiced a variety of techniques with them. We also studied the Element of Art: Space with a focus on foreground, middle ground, and background and how space is used in landscape art. Each student will create a winter landscape masterpiece using watercolor oil pastels in the cool colors.
Grade 3:
Third grade artists are studying the Element of Art: Color and learned how to create tertiary colors using primary and secondary colors. Students looked at paintings by our featured artist, Alma Woodsey Thomas, and learned about her fascinating life story. Each student will create an abstract landscape masterpiece using watercolor oil pastels in the style of Thomas’s work featuring blocks of vibrant color.
Grade 4:
Fourth graders are studying the art of Japanese Ink Wash painting and received a brief history of this deeply rooted cultural tradition. Students looked at videos featuring Japanese artists who share traditional ink wash techniques and were then able to practice with sumi ink on their own. Each artist will create a masterpiece of bamboo, cherry blossoms, or another type of plant to showcase organic lines using sumi ink wash on rice paper.
Grade 5:
Students have been working with the Element of Art: Form and reviewed the difference between shape and form. We learned about the history of the Noh Mask which is used in one type of traditional Japanese Theater. Each artist made their own mask using plaster strips and a plastic mask mold. Fifth graders were asked to design and decorate their masks with imagery and symbols that are meaningful to them using acrylic paint. Along with this project, students are also working on their clay tiles which will be part of a mural that will be on display at OPR as part of a wonderful school tradition.
