Pumpkin Patch Pumpkin Patch

Jr. Kindergarten and Kindergarten got to go to the Lil Harvesters pumpkin patch in October!

We had a lot of fun! Before going to the pumpkin patch, we learned about the pumpkin life cycle. Then when we were at the pumpkin patch, we got to see almost all of the pumpkin life cycle! We saw a flower on a vine, a small green pumpkin, many pumpkins turning from green to orange and of course orange pumpkins. It was so fun to take our learning outside of our classroom and make hands on connections to the things we had learned in our classroom. Along with the fun of seeing pumpkins grow, we also got to do many different activities they had set up for us. We went on a tracker ride, picked some corn, played in a huge sandbox, and jumped in the bouncy houses. To end the day each student went into the field and pick their own pumpkin to take home.

Here are the kids’ favorite parts of going to the pumpkin patch as they answer the question, “What was your favorite part of the pumpkin patch?”

Jameson: “Getting my giant pumpkin.”

Fiona: “The bouncy house, actually I like everything!”

Xander: “Playing at the bouncy house.”

Ryker: “Picking pumpkins.”

Bernard: “I liked everything!”

Wyatt: “Jumping in the bouncy castle.”

Jack: “When I got to pick out the pumpkin.”

Kamdyn: “Seeing the white pumpkins.”

Sofia: “Picking pumpkins.”

Jaxon: “The bouncy house.”

Avalynn: “The bouncy house.”

Mrs. Uphoff: “Seeing my class make connection and memories!”

6th Grade Field Trip to Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead 6th Grade Field Trip to Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in Lead

zoom_out_map

Recently we went on a field trip to SURF (Sandford Underground Research Facility) formally known as the Homestake Mine in Lead, SD. We were able to go by the gracious grant from the Custer Youth and Alumni Foundation. Here, we visited the Yates Headframe (the big white building) and its Hoist room. This room is responsible for lifting the rope (for every 1 ft. of rope = 5 pounds- and each headframe has 5,000 ft. of rope) that is connected to the elevators for the shafts to take the scientists (formally the miners) and equipment down into the mine. (picture of yellow wall is those lifts) While they have been down further all the Science experiments are done on the 4850ft. Underground level, temperatures can reach around 100 degrees.

The first ever experiment that was done while it was a gold mine- was the Solar Neutrino

Experiment in the 1970s, by Dr. Raymond Davis Jr. While during his time experimenting no one

really realized how revolutionary his work was, that is until the early 2000s, where he won the

Noble prize for his work. They have since taken the original experiment out (the big ring that all

of the 6th grade is in was part of that experiment) they have many going on now like the LUX

Zeplin-the DUNE experiment and others. These are all working with dark matter and neutrinos.

There are 370 miles of tunnels from the mine which equals out to 9,000 acres. While it is no

longer a gold mine- they are trying to make it the world's largest underground facility- as it is the

largest in North America anyway.

After our tour, the students were paired up and given the challenge to create their own hoist system using the materials they were given. Without any further instructions, it was up to them to gain their building permits- and to complete the challenges (4 in total.) This was really fun and they did great at problem solving. To finish out our day we moved to the visitor center to do a scavenger hunt about all that SURF has- more historical artifacts- and to learn more about the open cut of the Mine. Did you know that the white lines of rock is actually to youngest, that the red/purply rock is where the gold is, and the black rock is the oldest and called the poor man's claim, because if you were trying to mine that you would eventually be poor? Also, the town of Lead, was originally on top of where the open cut is now- and they had to relocate it a couple of times to where it is now so that they could mine the gold.

Here are a couple students views of our field trip:

  • One thing I learned was is that the scientice are bringing air up from underground my

favorite part was the visitor center

  • I learned that where the visitor center was that big hole outside use to be the only

part of deadwood. My favorite part of SURF was looking in the visitor center and

looking at the cool things that there were and learning more about SURF.

  • I learned that the mine is very deep and they don't use all the floors anymore. My

favorite part was the tour and getting to see where they control the ropes.

  • One thing I learned at Surf on Thursday that was interesting was that some of the

coworkers that go underground have to wear a flashlight or a headlamp for light and

if something is wrong they have different signals if something is wrong or if they

need help. I think my favorite part about Surf was all of it because I liked going

downstairs, Building the Cage, and being able to do all of that with my friends,

teachers, and Chad and Ashley they are both really cool people.

  • One thing that I thought was interesting was the wires on the cage never touch. My

favorite part would either be the cages or the big hole in the middle of lead. I build

things like the cages of legos realy often. I love to build elevators and stuff like that.

The Importance of Conceptual Understanding in Mathematics

Conceptual understanding involves understanding the relationships between concepts, while procedural understanding involves knowing the steps to follow to complete a task. Conceptual understanding helps to build a strong foundation.

When students understand the concepts of addition and subtraction, they can tackle complex problems more effectively. They can use their knowledge to estimate answers, recognize patterns, choose appropriate strategies for different types of problems, and apply them to everyday situations.

A deep understanding of these operations also promotes mental math skills. Students can manipulate numbers in their heads, making calculations faster and more efficient, which is invaluable in both academic and real-life scenarios.

Some strategies we use in my classroom for developing conceptual understanding are using hands-on materials such as ten-frames, bead racks, connecting cubes, and number lines. These tools help students visualize addition and subtraction and allow students to explore relationships between numbers. For example, they begin to see that if they are solving 9 +4, they can make a 10 and add 10 +3. They get so excited when they start recognizing these things on their own!

Addition and subtraction are foundational skills that lead to more advanced concepts, such as algebra and beyond. My goal is to give the students I work with a solid grasp of these basic operations and prepare them for more complex mathematical reasoning. When students achieve a conceptual understanding of addition and subtraction, they experience numerous benefits such as gaining confidence, the ability to retain skills learned, and developing a love for mathematics.

Principal's Ponderings

I'd like to share a few proud principal moments with you this month. The SD State Report Card was released to the public on October 18. I am proud to announce that Custer Elementary School improved by 1 point for an overall score of 68. Our ELA score was 59% proficient and Math was 58% proficient. We were in the top scores in our area(western South Dakota).

The SD Department of Education visited our building on Wednesday, October 30th. The team stopped in several classrooms to watch our students and staff in their daily routines and work. We were proud to share the great things we are doing in Custer Elementary. Following their visit, we met as a group at the high school for questions and debriefing.
