We are building!

Thank you to those families who sent in marshmallows, toothpicks, and Q-Tips. We have enough to do our STEM Challenges. Classes have started using the materials and we will do more in the next couple weeks. Thank you for your support!

1st grade: In library class, they listened to bookThe Dot by Peter Reynolds and listened to the song by Emily Arrow. In VW eLab class we "made a mark" on the button maker paper. You probably heard the story, the song, or seen the buttons we made. They truly enjoyed this activity and other staff members in the building heard about it as well.

2nd grade: They have been learning how to use the 3D pens. They will be making a project with the 3D pens and Chompsaw to go along with their Arts and Letters Module 1 theme.

3rd grade: Their stem challenge was making a tower 8 inches high using 32 mini marshmellows and 40 toothpicks. They they could only use those materials and a time limit. Working together they did their best to make a tower that didn't lean or fall.

4th and 5th grade:

Goals:

1. Not burn themselves with the hot glue.

2. Make a card with the supplies given.

Most cards were fall or Halloween themed. I encouraged them to give the card to someone they know. I told the classes that if they don't know who to give it to I will take them to the senior center that my mom went to.

Results: Both goals were achieved! I will be delivering their donated cards in the coming days.

Scholastic Book Fair is Coming!

The fall Scholastic Book Fair will be delivered after Halloween! Students will be making wishlists and bringing them home. Please look for the wish lists anytime between November 5th and November 11th.

We are looking for volunteers as well. Please see the PTO newsletters for the SUG times. We need volunteers to set up the fair, help JK-1st grades make wishlists, sell before and after school, sell during conferences, and pack up on Thursday night November 12th.

If you are wondering why we have Scholastic Book Fair, it is a fund raiser for the library. The profits range from 25-55% of the sales. Most of the profit is used to purchase books and manipulatives from Scholastic. I also choose "cash" so library supplies can be purchased, help with March is Reading Month activities, and pay for author visits. Of course the children love to get new books and many parents make purchases for their home libraries or gifts. Thank you for your support.

Scholastic eWallets

Scholastic eWallets are set up by parents and guardians so students can shop the fair without bringing cash to school. If you'd like to set up an ewallet, please click on the picture for the link to get started.

If you set up an eWallet last year for your student and didn't use all the funds, it transferred into a "gift card". You will need to go into your account and transfer that "gift card" to the fair's eWallet. You can click the picture to get a link to make the eWallet work for this fair.

GOOD NEWS! This is the last time you will have to transfer the left over eWallet money! Starting in 2027, whatever money you put in the eWallet will stay there and can be used at any time and you will not have to move it.

Battle of the Books!

Once again, Baldwin Public Library will be hosting the Battle of the Books for 4th and 5th graders with the Birmingham Public Schools librarians help. A pamphlet has already been send home. In years past, the Birmingham librarians coordinated selling a "Battle Books Bundle" with the store Book Beat. This year that is not being offered. Book titles will be revealed Monday December 7th. Bingham's library will have copies that can be checked out. Baldwin Public library will also have books to be checked out. If interested, you can contact Book Beat to see if they have the titles.
