Greetings Falcon Family,

As we enter November we have also reached the end of the first marking period. It's hard to believe we are one quarter of the way through the school year. With the marking period ending, our communication with you is vital. You should have had a parent conference in October. If you could not make the conference, please reach out to your child’s teacher to schedule a conference soon.

We have been working to continue instruction with a rigorous academic emphasis for our students. You have probably noticed that our math program has more language in it--more word problems and students are expected to explain their learning. As a school, we are working with students to develop skills in understanding and responding to open-ended questions in all subjects. This has meant some changes in our expectations for students. We are helping our students to identify key words and answers to questions within the text by highlighting and underlining. Please work with your child and encourage them to do the same when working independently.

The holidays of November and December present some opportunities for students to get some extra work in. I believe it's important for students to enjoy time with family and friends. But the days off in November and December do present opportunities to get some extra reading and math practice and gain an edge. Also remember that with the holidays approaching, it is imperative that students are in school and on time everyday! Every minute counts!

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me at Jewel.Preston@pgcps.org or 301.497.3110.

Educationally,

Ms. Preston, Principal

School attendance matters! Research has shown that regular attendance could be the greatest factor influencing a child’s academic success. Encouraging consistent attendance helps children get better grades, develop healthy life habits, avoid dangerous behavior, and increase their chances of graduating from high school..

How can parents help?

  • Every Day - On Time: Help your child login to school, on time, every day. Teach your child how to use an alarm clock, and keep the television turned off in the morning.

  • Promote the Importance of Education: Teach your child how important education is to their future success by stressing the importance of regular school attendance. Let your child know that attending school regularly will assist him/her in developing good habits they need for college and/or the workforce.

  • Notify the Teacher: Follow the attendance policy and report excused absences to the classroom teacher immediately.

  • Check Schoolwork: Each night, check to see that your child understands and completes the day's assignments. Take an active role. Stay involved with your child's daily experiences at school by asking how the school day went, and then listening carefully to what your child shares with you — both the successes and struggles. Make it a point to schedule conferences with your child's teacher(s).

How to Manage Your Stress

Stress arises when an event or situation makes us worried or anxious and gets in the way of our everyday life. It can be influenced by a number of factors: the type of person we are, what is happening to us, or our children, our responsibilities , and the people around us. Parenting can be very stressful, especially during this virtual learning environment. When not addressed, stress can be harmful, making us feel tired, bad tempered, and can also lead to physical problems such as headaches, asthma, and more serious illnesses such as heart disease. Here are some helpful strategies to reduce stress and to maintain a healthy , balanced life that allows for support yourself and your families.
