VOGELTOWN SCHOOL TE KURA O HUATOKI

WEEK 9, TERM 1, 2025.

VOGELTOWN SCHOOLTE KURA O HUATOKI WEEK 9, TERM 1, 2025.

FROM RYVES... FROM RYVES...

Kia ora Vogeltown Whānau,

The parent and teacher learning conferences are an important part of the relationship between school and parents-this flow of information leads to better outcomes for children.

This is the idea that education is like a three-legged stool. The school is one leg, the student is another, parents and whanau are the third. It takes all legs holding up their load for the stool to stand. All legs have an equal responsibility-different, yet equal.

On that note, many thanks to the large number of families that attended the learning conferences. While the poor weather made things a little trickier to manage yesterday, it was great to see large numbers of parents and whanau attending.

We view these parent-teacher conferences as a great opportunity to:

  • Share academic progress and growth based on classroom observations, assessments, and book work.
  • Learn from parents and whanau so we can be better informed about students' strengths, needs, behaviours, and learning styles.
  • Discuss enrichment or intervention strategies to support students' learning.
  • Explore issues that may be interfering with students' learning and growth.

It is our job now to take any information we have learned to improve relationships with children and refine the way we deliver learning to better match the needs of each child. If you have anything further you wish to discuss, you are welcome to contact the classroom teacher to arrange a further time. In addition, if you have any feedback about these for us to consider in the future, then please feel free to make contact.

Kia pai tō koutou rā-have a nice day.

COMMUNITY CONSULTATION COMMUNITY CONSULTATION

We believe that strong relationships with parents and whānau are at the heart of a successful school. By listening to your thoughts and ideas, we can make better decisions and ones that reflect what’s important to our community.

We recently sent out a link to our survey document via Seesaw and we’d really value your thoughts.

There are two parts to our survey:

1. Questions over time: questions that have traditionally been used to help us understand the engagement of our school community.

2. Reporting to parents: questions to help us understand what information you would like to receive when we’re reporting back to parents and whānau.

Just follow the link to have your say! https://forms.gle/duDbaNJjQgySVQeM6

WRITTEN REPORTS WRITTEN REPORTS

zoom_out_map

We are making some changes to the way we report to parents and whanau. We are required to formally report in writing twice during the year and we intend to do this at the end of Terms 2 and 4. We will use learning conferences to engage with parents and whānau in Terms 1 and 3.

AUTISM AWARENESS DAY AUTISM AWARENESS DAY

zoom_out_map

Autism Awareness Day was this week, and I’d like to take this opportunity to share some information about autism.

Autism is a natural variation in how the brain develops and processes information. This means autistic children may experience, understand, and respond to the world around them in unique ways that can be different from others. No two autistic children are the same, and their strengths, challenges, and needs can vary widely.

Autistic children might communicate and interact differently. Some may look away when talking to others, use gestures instead of words, or use very literal language. Some children might also take longer to reach language milestones or communicate in ways that differ from what we usually expect.

It’s also common for autistic children to have strong interests in specific things—such as trains, sea creatures, football statistics, or collecting items like sticks. These interests can bring great joy, might be short-term or lifelong, and are often an important part of a child’s world.

Repetitive behaviours are another way some autistic children express themselves or find comfort. This might include lining up toys, repeating phrases from shows or songs, flicking light switches, or making movements like rocking or hand-flapping. These behaviours often help children manage emotions or sensory input.

Many autistic children also have strong sensory preferences. Some may be very sensitive to things like bright lights, loud noises, or certain textures. Others may seek out sensory experiences—such as the feeling of a vibrating washing machine or the comfort of heavy blankets.

Routine and structure can be especially important. Autistic children often prefer things to stay the same, like eating familiar foods or wearing certain clothes. Sudden changes or transitions can feel overwhelming, so having predictable routines and preparing children for change can make a big difference.

It’s important to remember that autistic people also have many strengths and abilities. Some may learn to read at a very young age (a skill known as hyperlexia), or have exceptional memories. They may quickly learn new information, think visually, or solve problems in creative and logical ways.

Some children show particular talents in areas like science, engineering, maths, art, music, or dance. Others have an incredible attention to detail, a drive for order and perfection, and the ability to focus deeply—especially when something captures their interest.

Other strengths include honesty, punctuality, a strong sense of direction, and a love of rules and routines. Their unique view of the world often brings a special kind of creativity, curiosity, and wonder.

At Vogeltown School, we work hard to create a learning environment where every child feels safe, valued, and supported. We are always looking for ways to do better, and by understanding more about autism, we can help all children feel that they belong.

INTERSCHOOL SPORTS INTERSCHOOL SPORTS

zoom_out_map

In our senior area, we’ll be back into the interschool sports scene next term. This is a competitive sports scene and with that comes the need to select our most capable payers for each sport-rugby, netball, and football.

We realise that sometimes this can cause some children to feel upset but please understand that teachers in charge of sports find making selections tough going, and they do their very best to ensure that this is done in a sensitive way.

HUATOKI STREET - PARTIAL CLOSURE HUATOKI STREET - PARTIAL CLOSURE

The New Plymouth Infrastructure Partnership will be completing upgrades to Huatoki Street, at the intersection of Carrington Street, from Monday 7 April to improve safety for all road users including school students, cyclists and pedestrians.

To complete the work as safely and efficiently as possible, the work will be completed under two stages of road closures.

Using a road closure allows crews to complete the work as safely and quickly as possible, reducing the overall construction period by 2-3 weeks. We have scheduled this work to coincide with the April school holidays, to minimise disruption on this busy road.

Here is what you need to know:

  • From Monday 7 to Saturday 19 April Huatoki Street between Hursthouse and Carrington streets will be closed to all traffic 24/7. This stage of work will take approximately 2 weeks to complete (weather permitting). Please note Monday 7th April to Friday 11th April is the last week of Term 1. The remainder of this closure will be in the school holidays.
  • From Saturday 19 April to Saturday 10 May Huatoki Street between Hursthouse and Carrington Streets will be under a single lane closure for three weeks (weather permitting). This means: Access to Huatoki Street from Carrington Street will be closed, and traffic on Huatoki Street will be able to exit onto Carrington Street. Please note Monday 28th April to Friday 9th May is the first two weeks of Term 2.

During all stages of construction:

  • Alternative routes will be available and clearly signposted for the duration of the closure.
  • Carrington Street will remain open to both directions of traffic at all times.
  • Pedestrian, property, and business access will be maintained at all times. If access to your property is limited during the works and you need to travel, please speak with one of our onsite crew and they will assist you.
  • Road users are asked to be patient, follow all instructions of our crews, and comply with all temporary signs.
  • In the event of unsuitable weather, the road will remain closed and work postponed to the next suitable day.

On behalf of the New Plymouth Infrastructure Partnership, thank you in advance for your patience and understanding while we do this important work in your community.

If you have any queries regarding these works, please contact NPDC on 06-759 6060. You can also receive important updates from NPDC via the Antenno app.

Kind regards,

The team at New Plymouth Infrastructure Partnership
