The ConnectionPrograms for Exceptional Children, November 13, 2023

Getting ready!

The holidays are just about upon us! There is so much going on this month for our PEC families in Florence 1! In this edition of The Connection you will find information about the Transition Fair that is on Monday, November 13th! Check it out to connect with agencies that can support your student in preparing for post-secondary opportunities. There is also a parent training that will share information about the many resources available in our area to families that have students with exceptional needs. It will be on Tuesday, November 14th at 10 am and 6 pm.

You can also check out informaiton about Community Long Term Care, that can help with incontinent supplies and caregiver support for families that are eligible. And don't miss the fun Gratitude Scavenger Hunt that you can print out and enjoy with your family!

We hope you'll take some time to read through these resources, and don't forget that if you need a question answered or just aren't sure where to turn, you can contact our Parent Liaison, Erika Chapman, at 843-292-1008 or echapman@f1s.org. She would love to connect with you!

Something to Consider Something to Consider

When we are intentional about noticing and expressing our gratitude, we are much more likely to receive the subtle and not-so-subtle gifts around us.

Behavior Tip Behavior Tip

What can I say when we play?

Playing with your child is a great activity for interaction, but also for modeling language! Dana Howell, from Behavioral Interventions and Solutions, shares these great examples of what to say when you play with your child to model lots of language!

SIZE: Describe the proportion of the item. "This is a little block."

SHAPE: Discuss the shape of the item. The block is square."

COLOR: Label the color of the item. "The block is red."

ACTION: Talk about how the item can move. "The blocks fell down."

PRONOUN: Define who has which item. "This block is mine and that block is yours."

SOUND: Express the sound the item makes. "The blocks clack together."

POSITION: Identify the arrangement of the item. "The blocks are in the basket."

NUMBER: Count out a set of items. "Let's stack 5 blocks."

Take some time this week to play with your child and put some of these into practice!
