Principal's Update
Kia ora e te whānau,
As we reach the conclusion of a busy and rewarding Term 1, I want to extend a huge thank you to our students, staff, and whānau for your ongoing support. This term has been filled with learning, growth, and remarkable achievements.
We are currently navigating a period of significant educational change. You may have followed the Minister of Education’s announcements regarding a renewed qualifications framework and a revised curriculum. This curriculum is notably more prescriptive than in the past, and our Year 9s of 2026 will be the first students to experience the Foundational Certificate in 2028.
At HVHS, we are well-prepared for this transition. We already offer a focused Year 11 programme emphasising literacy, numeracy, and preparation for the specialised years of Year 12 and 13. While our staff are grappling with these enormous changes, we are committed to sharing updates with you as they happen. Thank you to those who have already attended our information evenings.
With the release of new curricula for English and Maths, we are now reporting using different language, such as "progress markers" and "descriptors." This language indicates where your child sits compared to other students their age, using criteria such as Emerging, Developing, Consolidating, Proficient and Exceeding. It is important to note that this system does not always account for whether a student is an English Language Learner or faces specific literacy or learning challenges. These students may end up feeling that they are stuck on Emerging or Developing. The key thing to think about here is Progress; we know that not all students start from the same point or progress at the same rate, but it is important they are progressing.
To gain a clear understanding of your child's progress, please refer to their Attitude to Learning grades, written reports which detail their strengths and areas for development, and any specific support plans in place, such as those for literacy or numeracy. You are always welcome to talk to our teachers to fully understand your child’s unique journey.
Summer Tournament Week
Our students have represented HVHS with incredible pride and talent over the last few weeks. Our athletes competed across the country with outstanding results including the Ultimate Frisbee Girls' Team winning the national title, and achieving back to back national title wins, and our medalists at the recent North Island Secondary Schools Athletics Championships - Anna Green (10WSLN), Ben Kimber (12FE), Hudson Thom (9GERA), Jacob Williams (11GS), and Leo Hyink (11GS).

A Glimpse into the Future: C-Block
Last week, the staff and I were finally able to see inside the new C-Block. It is a spacious, modern facility, and we are eagerly anticipating the creativity that will flourish within its walls - and hopefully a summer music concert series out on the grass, with kai provided by our hospitality students. We look forward to the formal opening next term.
Our Generous Community - The Non-Uniform Day's Foodbank Drive
A huge, heartfelt thank you to our entire school community for your incredible generosity during our recent Non-Uniform Day appeal. Together, we donated over 1,500 cans for the Lower Hutt Foodbank.
There is a specific kind of "warm glow" that comes from collective giving. In a world that often feels individualistic, seeing our students pile up crates of food for families they may never meet is a powerful reminder of our school values. That feeling of contribution, of being part of something bigger than ourselves, is exactly the kind of "soft skill" and character we strive to build here at HVHS. Well done to our student leaders who put this ‘drive’ together.

"Mā pango, mā whero, ka oti te mahi." By black and by red, the work is done.
This term has truly tested our endurance and teamwork. It's been a marathon for staff and students alike, with the long days and nights of EOTC (Education Outside of the Classroom) trips transitioning directly into the vibrant energy of sports tournament week.
My sincere thanks go to the staff and key parent volunteers whose leadership makes these trips possible. Your commitment can be demanding and exhausting; at times, the effort must feel akin to herding cats. You are, in essence, shepherds, coaches, and sleep-deprivation specialists all rolled into one.
Anyone who hasn't accompanied teenagers on an EOTC trip might not appreciate the challenge of settling down exhausted Year 11 PE students in tents, coaxing excited Year 12 Geography students to sleep after crossing Tongariro, or rushing between motel units to ensure our athletes are well-rested, hydrated, and nourished for another day of intense volleyball or basketball games!
As we transition into the term break, my hope is that every member of our school community finds the time to rest, recharge, and restore their energy. Have a lovely Easter and Term 1 break. See you all ready for a successful Term 2.
Ngā mihi nui,
Denise Johnson, Principal
Arts Learning Area - Recent Trips to Petone Settlers and Dowse Art Museums
Students met with the educator Esme Dawson, who guided them through the collections and introduced them to interesting artefacts, objects, and significant taonga. Students were able to draw and take photographs of what they saw for use in their own artworks back at school.
Friendly Reminder - Collect Your Art Workbooks by Friday, 1 May!
Art students who haven't collected their 2025 Art Workbook are encouraged to pick them up at the start of Term 2. Unclaimed workbooks will be recycled after Friday, 1 May 2026.
Watch ‘The Pact’ + Get a First Look at ‘Ghosted’
It's been a happily busy term for our film making team. The short film The Pact, which you can watch here, had its premiere at Lighthouse Petone last week. The Pact stars Year 13 graduates - Grace Haggie, Zach Devery, and Isabella Carruthers.
This year's wonderful cast are now well into the shoot for a feature length project Ghosted, which will be shown later in the year. This short clip captures a little of the mood of the piece.
Join the HVHS Relay for Life Team & Help Wellington Families Fighting Cancer
Our Service Leaders, Hugh McWhinnie (13JDPN) and Izzy Fogarty (13JDPN) have set up the HVHS 2026 Relay For Life Team and it's ready for students and staff to sign up and join.
Relay for Life is a community event to celebrate survivors, remembers those we’ve lost, and helps fight back against cancer by raising life-saving funds for the Cancer Society.
To register to join the HVHS Team, visit the Relay for Life website, select 'Wellington' and under teams search for 'HVHS'. It’s a great opportunity to have lots of fun, and raise funds for a great cause! For any questions, please email Tim Fox (Deputy Principal) at tim.fox@hvhs.school.nz.
SNAP Amazing Race!
Students from the SNAP (Sustainable Networks and Pathways) Programme and their Year 13 Mentors took part in an Amazing Race around Lower Hutt.
They had to complete challenges such as counting all the seats in the grandstand at Hutt Rec, seeing how far they could pedal on the exercise bikes at Huia Fitness and icing muffins at Muffin Break in Queensgate.
It was great to see how well the students worked together in their teams. Special thanks to the staff at Huia Pool + Fitness and Muffin Break at Queensgate for their support.
Year 11 Geography's Trip to the Wairarapa
- by Cooper Gibbs (11SA)
Recently my class and I went to the Wairarapa to visit some interesting locations to do some research. Today I am writing my review of the recent Year 11 Geography trip. Overall, the trip gave us really great insight and helped connect what we’ve been learning in class to real world examples.
One of the highlights for me was visiting Lightyears Solar's Waingawa Solar Farm (pictured below). It was interesting to see how renewable energy is produced on a large scale and to learn about the benefits and challenges of solar power in New Zealand. This visit made the concept of sustainable energy much more practical and easier to understand.
At Urlar Vineyard, I found it useful to learn about how environmental factors like climate, soil, and water availability influence grape growing. It showed how geography directly impacts viticultural decisions and productivity.
The visit to Juno Olives was also really interesting, especially in understanding how local conditions support olive production and how businesses adapt to their environment. It was a good example of how land use varies depending on geographic factors.
Lastly, we visited the proposed site for Far North Solar Farm's new development, located south west of Greytown. This gave a good insight into future land use planning and sustainability. It was interesting to consider the possible environmental and economic impacts of such a development.
Overall, the trip was well thought out and very helpful to us in learning to understand how the geographical features of land alter the possible use of that land. It helped reinforce key geographic concepts such as environmental factors, land use, and the interaction between people and the environment.
Kai Donations to Support Our Students
At HVHS we want every student to have the opportunity to learn and thrive. One of the ways we support this is by making sure students who arrive without breakfast or enough food for the day can access kai when they need it.
If you’re able to help, we are currently seeking donations of sandwich spreads, muesli bars and Up & Go breakfast drinks. Donations can be dropped directly to the School Office during term time, Monday to Friday, 8am–4pm. For any questions, you’re also welcome to email Claire Ross (Head of Wellbeing) at claire.ross@hvhs.school.nz. Ka nui te mihi.

Upcoming Learning Community Hubs for Migrant Parents & Students
After a successful 2025 where we ran a series of parent seminars and student workshops for our migrant whānau and students we are hosting some additional events this year.
The first parent meeting in 2026 will be held on Wednesday, 29 April from 6.30pm to 8:00pm in the school staffroom. The session will introduce the English Language programme at HVHS and the pathways we offer for students who are still learning English. We will also briefly outline NCEA and our reporting processes.
Later in the term we are planning a subject selection workshop for parents and a pathways and university entrance seminar. All these events will be supported by translators and are open to all migrant parents in our school.
For students we have three events planned. We will run an Inspiring the Future workshop again where migrant youth get to meet industry specialists who are also migrants to New Zealand. This was our most successful and popular event last year so we’re really looking forward to presenting this again. We’ll also do a session on leadership development and internet security and cyber responsibility.
We are very thankful to the Ministry of Education for the grant to run this initiative. For any questions, please email Sarah Roper (Head of English Language) at sarah.roper@hvhs.school.nz
