Dayton Families,

What an incredible start to the school year it has been! Our Eagles have truly soared during our first trimester of learning. They have demonstrated remarkable academic growth, strengthened their social-emotional skills, and built supportive classroom communities.

To celebrate the completion of a successful trimester, we hosted a special school-wide event on Friday, November 21. The theme was "Mission Accomplished". This was a fun way to recognize the hard work and dedication of every student. Thank you to our countless volunteers who helped make this happen. We encourage you to ask your student:

  • What part of the "mission" (learning) are you most proud of?

  • What is your next great learning "mission" for Trimester 2?

Report cards for Trimester 1 will be accessible online on Monday, December 8. Click here to review instructions on how to access online report cards.

Throughout December, our school-wide Character Strong focus will be on Empathy. We define empathy as “understanding and connecting with other people’s feelings”. We encourage you to engage in conversations around empathy at home. See the following links to support your family's discussions:

  • Kindergarten Family Connection

  • 1st Grade Family Connection

  • 2nd Grade Family Connection

  • 3rd Grade Family Connection

  • 4th Grade Family Connection

  • 5th Grade Family Connection

We are striving to make this our most engaging year yet for parent involvement! Your input and support are vital to enriching the Dayton experience for all students. We invite you to join our next PTO meeting.

  • Next PTO Meeting: Monday, December 8 at 6:00 PM

  • Location: Dayton Elementary Media Center

Thank you for your continuous support. We wish you and your family a wonderful and peaceful December.

-Mrs. Wippler

🌲 December in Explorations 🌲

🔮 Kindergarten – Marble Run Engineers
Kindergarteners are finishing up their work on animal habitats and jumping into something new and hands-on: Marble Run Engineers! We’ll be exploring how things move by experimenting with pushes, pulls, direction, and force. Students will get to explore ramps and build their own marble runs—this one is always a favorite!

🍁 First Grade – Animal Reporters
First graders are wrapping up the Museum of Leafology by looking at how designs in nature inspire human inventions. Ask your student how they’d solve a problem using an idea from nature! Next, we’ll launch Animal Reporters, where we dig into animal adaptations. We’ll be learning fascinating facts like how owls can rotate their heads up to 270° to spot prey and how camels’ long eyelashes protect their eyes from blowing sand.

🔧 Second Grade – Master of Materials
Second graders are continuing their Master of Materials unit as we explore how materials can change and how combining them can create something new. Soon, we’ll take all of that learning and use it to design and build our own bridges. Students will be thinking like engineers as they test which materials create the strongest structures.

🧲 Third Grade – The Ultimate Playground
Third graders are moving forward with The Ultimate Playground, where we’ve been exploring non-touching forces like gravity, static electricity, and magnetism (along with some fun playground structures like swings and roller coasters). This month, we’re focusing on magnets. Fun fact to share at home: the Earth is actually a giant magnet—this is why compasses work!

🗺️ Fourth Grade – Spatial Thinking
Fourth graders are digging deeper into our Spatial Thinking unit. They’re comparing maps of the U.S. and Canada, examining satellite images, and studying how populations spread across regions. These activities help students understand geography, how humans interact with the land and resources, and why maps are such important tools.

⚓ Fifth Grade – Colonization
Fifth graders are wrapping up their Explorers unit and heading into our study of Colonization. We’ll explore why people started colonies, what life was like in early settlements, and how colonization shaped different parts of the world. Ask your student how they would start a new colony! What would they need to survive? What resources would be most important? What challenges might they face?

Library

During the month of December, we will be digging into makerspaces! Students in grades K-5 will have the opportunity to explore, create, problem solve, build and collaborate with others during a variety of makerspace activities.

ButterBraid Fundraising Pickup

Monday, December 8th 4:15pm - 7:00 pm

•We’ll begin handing out orders as soon as regular dismissal wraps up - our goal is to start around 4:15 p.m.

•Because these items are perishable, a parent or guardian must pick up each student’s order. We’re not able to send orders home with students.

•Please come in through the front doors of Dayton Elementary to pick up your student’s orders.

•For everyone’s safety, please wait to enter the front parking lot or get out of your vehicle until all buses have pulled away.

•If your child’s dismissal plans will be different on pick up day, please call the main office to inform them.

Woot Woot Wagon!

Help us keep the Woot Woot Wagon rolling! We're collecting fun snacks and small treats to celebrate our amazing staff. If you’re shopping holiday deals, it’s the perfect time to grab an extra item or two to donate. Any contribution—big or small—helps spread joy throughout our school.

Welcome Kristin Gow - Dayton Volunteer Services Coordinator

Kristin Gow joined our staff in early November as the new Volunteer Services Coordinator. She has two kids in the district and has been an active volunteer with Anoka Hennepin for over 6 years. She is excited to be working with all of the volunteers at Dayton to help support our classrooms and school events.

THANK YOU!

A big thank you to our volunteers that have helped with the workroom, Skillbuilders, classroom support, chaperoning, End of Trimester Parties and the Eagle Marketplace and Dessert Shop! Dayton volunteers have given over 1,169 hours of their time so far this school year!

VSC Reminders

Please check our Dayton Volunteer Opportunities Website often to view upcoming volunteer opportunities.

Individuals who wish to volunteer, including field trip chaperones, must complete both the Volunteer Application and Criminal Record History Release form at each school site, every school year.

Anoka-Hennepin Parent Involvement Resource Events
Are you looking for more information to help your PTO, booster club, or other community organization? Join us at the FREE Parent Involvement Resource Events, listed on the Parent Involvement Resource Page and at the Resource Event Flyer! All events are in Anoka at the Educational Services Center.

Enrichment Opportunities

We are looking for volunteers to lead a couple of Enrichment Opportunities at Dayton. Online training is available for anyone interested in being a leader.

Math Plus enrichment groups:

The purpose of the Math PLUS is to provide additional, on-going mathematical experiences for students in grade K-5. Students participate in math activities that reinforce problem solving, logic and reasoning, and communicating mathematical findings.

Challenge Reading Enrichment groups:

Volunteers provide children with additional opportunities to foster a love of reading outside of the classroom by introducing various genres of literature, extending students' writing connections, and promoting higher level thinking skills.

If you are interested in leading a Math Plus or Challenge Reading Enrichment Group, please contact Kristin Gow, Volunteer Services Coordinator at kristin.gow@ahschools.us

Hello Parents,

As we enter winter, illnesses typically increase. Please notify the health office if your student has an illness that requires treatment: strep, impetigo, ringworm, fifth disease, scabies, and lice. If we see a cluster of 3 or more students in 1 class, we will send a notification to the whole class. If you've reported the diagnosis to the attendance line, we do see that, but often diagnosis comes later in the day, and that's when we would appreciate an email or phone call.

Please remind your students to wash their hands! And please let us know if you have any other questions or concerns.

Thank you!

Parent pick-up starts promptly at 4:00 PM in the Dayton and Rebel parking lots.

Please call 763-506-2200 by 3:00 PM if you need to change a dismissal plan.

DISMISSAL PROCEDURES LINKED HERE

Early Dismissals Early Dismissals

Early dismissals should occur only in rare circumstances. Please make every effort to schedule appointments outside of school hours. Students leaving even a few minutes early often miss important last minute instructions and/or reminders. Interrupting classes to call students to the office also distracts other students and interrupts classroom routines.

If an early dismissal is unavoidable, allow us ample time to locate your student. We ask that early dismissals are avoided after 3:30 PM. We will call your student down when you arrive.

Daily schedules are available here.

ONLY parents and legal guardians are authorized to pick up. If you need someone else to pick up your child, please call the office at 763-506-2200 in advance to make arrangements.
