Welcome to 2024 Welcome to 2024

Kia ora Parents, Whānau and Caregivers, welcome to the 2024 school year. Apologies that it has taken some time getting this first newsletter out to you. I intentionally waited until we had our new Spotlight app up and running, which it now is. There is only a small handful of families that still need to load the app, please come and see us at school if you require assistance.

The year has started off well and just like that we are halfway through the term already. The children and staff have been enjoying this beautiful summer of ours with the swimming pool being a very popular place indeed. Learning programmes are well underway with testing taking place to determine where children are at, and where the teacher can take them to next.

2024 Annual plan 2024 Annual plan

Te Aroha Primary School has 4 clear objectives that we will be basing our school teaching and learning and school-wide focus around in 2024. They are;

Academic learning

Students are leaders of their learning

Teaching and leadership

Leadership and teaching is effective

School culture and community

Active partnerships with whānau/ family and community

People, Tools, & Resources

The school has what it needs for students to be successful

We will update you with progress on these goals as the year goes on. There are exciting initiatives attached to each one that will be rolled out as the year goes along.

The first thing that is coming your way is a community survey that you will be asked to complete next week (Week 6). The survey is for us to gather baseline data around how well you feel we do in supporting the needs of your children and helping them to have a sense of belonging at TAPS. Look out for it from the 4th of March.

ICT update ICT update

The Board of Trustees have recently purchased 50 new Chromebooks and 12 new iPads for our school. This is going to make a significant improvement to our students ability to reliably access online learning here at TAPS. We thank the BOT for their support and are looking forward to the arrival of the new devices.

Teacher Only Day - Thursday 28 March Teacher Only Day - Thursday 28 March

Te Aroha Primary School has been given an unique opportunity to build a programme for our students. The programme is centred around Restorative practice / Trauma informed practice.

Here are some of the key benefits of the programme;

Focus on Holistic Well-being - importance of addressing not just academic success but also the emotional and social aspects of a child's development

Building Stronger Connections - restorative practices aim to build and strengthen positive relationships within the school community, fostering a sense of belonging and connection among students, teachers, and parents/whānau

Conflict Resolution Skills - restorative practices teach valuable conflict resolution and communication skills. These skills not only benefit students in their school life but can also be applied in various situations throughout their lives

Reducing Disciplinary Issues - focus is on understanding the root causes of behaviour rather than simply punishing, leading to more constructive and sustainable outcomes

Individualised Support - individualised support that trauma-informed processes provide for students who may be dealing with various challenges. Teachers and staff are trained to recognise and respond to the unique needs of each student

Improved Academic Performance - when students feel safe, supported, and connected, their academic performance tends to improve

Partnership with Parents/whānau - involving parents in the process strengthens the partnership between educators and families

The first step in the process of undertaking this important mahi is a Teacher Only Day on Thursday 28 March. This mahi involves ALL our team so there will not be an option for children to be supervised that day. Please accept our apologies if this causes you any inconvenience, but we will need you to make alternative arrangements for that day.

This is going to make a positive impact on our school/kura and is an exciting time for us. We will be sure to keep you all updated along the way.

Tuakana Teina Tuakana Teina

Truly heartwarming to see some of our Year 8 students take the lead in kapa haka last week. They led by example and supported our roopu by going over the actions for our school waiata and mihi whakatau.

Fantastic to see the leadership capabilities of these students and their growth as positive role models for other students.

Waihou Hub hui Waihou Hub hui

The Waihou hub had their first assembly on the 16th February. During the assembly new students were welcomed and all three junior classes learnt where the name Waihou came from. It's the river that runs through Te Aroha!

It was lovely to see the school values of Respect and Responsibility shining through with the certificates given. The Waihou hub are striving to be kind and be role models.

Year 5 & 6 Basketball Year 5 & 6 Basketball

Well done to this amazing bunch of players. We didn't have enough players to make a Year 5/6 Basketball team so some lovely Year 4’s stepped up to play with a couple of older ones. Only one of these had actually played before and they were amazing!!! They played with guts and determination and we were all so proud of them!
