Our Classrooms Have Been Busy!!!
ELA
We started the year with Unit #1: Deep Study of Character. Students are learning about character traits and character types. They have been reading many quick-read/high-interest level books from my classroom library. Much of the work is done in their notebooks. Students should have their notebook with them at all times. Everything is glued in their notebook: reading logs, HW, anchor charts, etc. Students may read books of their choice at home. They do need a novel for school that can be used for character analysis. Students have been utilizing the library as well. I take students to the library 1x a week. Students should be reading 30 min/day and logging their reading in their notebooks. This may happen at school or at home. Students should always check Google Classroom for classwork or homework, especially if they are absent.
SPOOK SQUAD: CREATIVE WRITING CONTEST
Students will be introduced to this opportunity in Ms. Cornish's ELA class, but it will be optional.
Math
In math, we have been learning about the areas of parallelograms, quadrilaterals, triangles, and polygons. Students have been doing great in finding the area when all sides are given, or partial information is given! We will have a test the week following Indigenous Peoples' Day.
Please work with students on multiplication skills! Having a basic foundation of skills is incredibly necessary to continue learning in math.
A note on math homework and weekly IXLs.
It is important for students to practice their math homework because it will set them up for further success as they learn new skills. Practice makes progress! They always have access to email me or to watch Mr. Morgan's videos on YouTube.
Currently, in Unit 1, if students don’t do homework, they stay in for recess. As we move into Unit 2, a 3-strike policy will be in effect for math homework. If students miss 3 nights of homework in one unit, they will owe me an hour after school and will need to be picked up at 3.
For weekly IXLs, they are assigned on Mondays and they go until the following Sunday. This gives students 7 days to complete them. These IXL skills are a different form of practice, but still follow what students are learning or should have been previously taught. If I find that these are going undone, then I will ask students to stay after for Homework Haven, which runs from 2-4 on Thursdays after school.
Mr.Morgan's YouTube Channel for nightly math help!
Science
We are learning about Chemistry. We started the year learning how atoms and elements make up molecules. Next, we worked on measurements such as mass, volume, and density. Our new focus is on chemical and physical properties and changes. On Wednesdays, we are using the ScienceWorld magazine to learn skills on how to answer comprehension questions. Throughout this next unit, we will be writing using evidence and reasoning to explain our thinking.
Social Studies
We have started the year off learning about the Geography and Settlement of Egypt, Kush, and Canaan. The students have been learning about how the physical geography in both Africa and Asia affected where people settled in ancient times. The students have worked through a paired reading note taking assignment and also learned about cause and effect through the lens of settlement in ancient Canaan. Students took part in a class activity where they became part of an interactive map and or were settlers deciding where to live on the map. This activity gave students a great visual to refer back to. Our next lesson will focus on the Pharaohs of ancient Egypt and their accomplishments.
