Message from Nicole Pease
Good afternoon DCS Families, I hope your week has been a good one! It has been fairly quiet this week after all the goings on around here since school started. Classrooms, have established small group and interventions to meet students needs and move them forward in their growth! It is an exciting time to see how students move forward in their learning!
Next week brings the annual Halloween Parade Friday morning. We will dress up and hike up the hill to the Yankee Parking Lot. Parading around the parking lot is a treat in itself, but many of our community members will be waiting with some treats for us. The afternoon will include a hands on Science Presentation "Boo Bubbles" through Xploration with Jeremy Griffiths. The following week will be focused upon giving to our community as we celebrate Veterans Day; we have invited local Veterans to join us for coffee and snacks after which we will hold a whole school Assembly. Our students have enjoyed writing to local Veterans to invite them to attend, it is such a joy to watch them honor Veterans. I hope you have a wonderful weekend, Nicole
Third, Fourth, and Fifth Grade Team with Mrs. Garland and Mrs. Quinn
The 3/4/5 team has been busy learning and growing on our side of the building. Highlights from last week were definitely cooking and baking for the Harvest Festival and our all-school hike! Mrs. Quinn’s class welcomed two new members to their classroom. They will be caring for these baby turtles until spring and researching turtles and their development.
For Social and Emotional Learning, Mrs. Garland’s class is learning about the Worry Woos. “The Worry Woo program is an evidence-based curriculum that includes props for teaching Social-Emotional Learning.” Mrs. Quinn’s class continues to work on developing strategies to show kindness. Our current focus is on ensuring we support (not hinder) others' learning.
For Math, the third-grade students are encountering the concept of area, relating the area of rectangles to multiplication, and solving problems involving area. The
fourth-graders are using factors to find or create equivalent fractions. While the fifth-graders have started a new Unit focused on Multiplying Fractions.
During Social Studies, the 3rd/4th graders are learning about weather in NH. Individually, they are writing opinion essays about which season is best in our state. Please ask their opinion on the best season in this area.
The 5th graders enjoyed a week-long Biome study with Jamie from the Harris Center.
First and Second Grade with Mrs. Fletcher
First and second graders are finishing up our Human Body unit! We’ve been busy identifying major bones, learning about voluntary and involuntary muscles, tracking the digestive process, and more! The students also wrote the most beautiful letters to our Veterans! Each letter included an invitation to our Veterans Day assembly on November 6th—we hope many of you can join us as well as our local veterans. The children are practicing their greetings, handshakes, and saying, “Thank you for your service,” as they prepare to give their very best at the assembly.
Our White Ledges hike was the perfect way to end the week! Students loved climbing on the rocks, enjoying a picnic, and taking in the beautiful views. In math, we’ve been working on addition and subtraction through word problems—practicing both careful thinking and problem-solving strategies. It’s been a busy and rewarding time in grades one and two!
Kindergarten with Mrs. Lang
It was wonderful to see everyone at our Harvest Dinner! This week we’ve been busy putting our garden to bed for the winter. We made delicious squash and apple soup, planted garlic, and harvested our last carrots of the season. In math, we practiced counting accurately on paper using slash marks to keep track. Our hike to the White Ledges in Temple for lunch was a big highlight! We also had fun decorating for Harvest Feast making spooky mummy lanterns, creative haunted houses, and a very looooooooong paper chain! Check out our classroom website for pictures of all the things we've been doing. Keep reading!
