NJSLA Testing NJSLA Testing

The week of April 29, all middle school students will be taking part in the state standardized testing. Monday - Wednesday of that week will be English Language Arts and Mathematics for both seventh and eighth grade students. Thursday and Friday will be science testing for eighth graders only (seventh graders will attend their classes).

To accommodate the testing, the students will follow a half day schedule the week of April 29.

Student performance on these assessments provides important information on our students’ progress. It is important that students come ready to do their best during these assessment days. A few key reminders:

  • Students should get a good night’s sleep

  • Students should have a good breakfast

  • Students should bring their charged Chromebook with them to school

Month of the Military Child Month of the Military Child

When we return from break, it will be April and that is the Month of the Military Child. It recognizes the unique challenges faced by children who grow up in families whose parents serve in our nation’s armed forces. Among the activities we are holding throughout the month include having students from military families lead our school in our daily Pledge of Allegiance. In addition, since purple is the color of the military child, we invite all of our students to wear purple on Thursdays throughout the month of April.

Clinical Corner Clinical Corner

With all different tests around the corner as we near the end of the school year, I thought it would be helpful to talk about tolerating test stress. Let’s get straight to strategies to use. The one I liked the best is writing out what you are anxious about in regards to the test. Such as how you are feeling, why the test matters to you, and what your performance means to you, etc. Then you can throw it away. So get it out, and get it into the garbage and not have it all in your thoughts! This can really help you get calm before any test. If writing is not your thing, voice record and then delete!

Other strategies mentioned in the article “Taming Test Anxiety” are:

  • Deep breathing,

  • Consciously relaxing by relaxing each muscle group

  • Decreasing distractions, especially like knowing where it helps most to sit

  • Engaging in positive self-talk

  • Not fixating on the clock
