Reflections from Pastor Jennifer
We are in the process of reviewing our church mission of SOULS, along with the vision of Acts 1:8...
"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you. And you will be my witnesses, telling people about me everywhere—in Jerusalem, throughout Judea, in Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” (Acts 1:8 NLT). To CCOG, each place represents a group of people. Jerusalem - closest family and friends, the people who are most like us. Judea - co-workers, acquaintances, those with whom we share common interests. Samaria - underserved groups, the people who (if we are really honest) we would rather not be around. The ends of the earth - strangers near and far.
The third part of our mission is Uplifting Conversation. How can we participate in uplifting conversations? The way we speak to and about others matters. We are able to call out the positive things we see in their lives - all that we see the Lord doing in and through them. That conversation must also continue when the person is not around. Perhaps we have all been guilty of speaking in a negative way about someone when they were not around. This keeps us from seeing them the way that God sees them. Lord, help each of us to speak in uplifting ways (or don't say anything at all!).
Also, how are you talking to yourself? Are you speaking negativity and defeat - calling yourself dumb or ugly or unloved? Is that what God says about you? Of course not, so stop allowing that to be your self-talk! You are made in the image of God. He is proud of you and has good plans for you.

OCC
There is still another week to bring rainbow colored gifts for the shoeboxes. You may want to bring markers, coloring books, toys, or something else that is colorful. If you want to get a head start on June, bring some jump ropes.
May Focus
Instead of simply being told to study, we are learning how to study. Bring your Bible and a notebook with you on Sunday morning. If you have missed a Sunday, there are extra copies of the various study methods we have used this month.
5th Sunday
If you have signed up to bring a breakfast food or beverage, remember that 5th Sunday is this week. Invite friends or family to enjoy breakfast and Bible study this Sunday, May 31st.
Clean-up
We need your help! On Wednesday, June 3rd there will be a job for each person to do. The church and fellowship hall will get an extra scrub, the weeds need to be eliminated, and tables need to be prepped/decorated.
HoCo 2026
Our 80th "Oak-iversary" is almost here! Sunday, June 7th is the big day. Invite friends, family, co-workers, members who used to attend CCOG, and anyone else you can think of to celebrate our special day!
When God’s Word Speaks to You
God’s Word is alive and active; it changes us when we engage with it. Mark has seen that firsthand in his life and reflects on the ways he’s seen Scripture change those around him:
Think back to a time when you read God’s Word and heard him speak to you personally. Perhaps it was a word of encouragement, breathing hope into your anxious heart. Perhaps it was a word of conviction, when the Holy Spirit revealed an area in your life that you need to deal with. Perhaps it was a new spiritual insight, something you had never thought of before.
In those moments, when you heard God’s voice, how did you feel? What did you experience? Was it comfort, joy, guilt, forgiveness, freedom, hope or a deep sense of God’s love for you? It is an incredible experience to have the Creator of the universe whisper intimately in your ear, touching the very depths of your soul. It stirs up all kinds of emotions and responses.
This happens in every language when people encounter God through His Word. My wife, Kathy, is a Bible translation consultant. To ensure that the translated Scriptures are accurate, clear, natural and acceptable, Kathy and the translation team have local speakers read the translation verse by verse. Then, through a series of questions and answers, they are able to ensure that the translation accurately conveys the meaning of the original Greek or Hebrew.
After the translation check, Kathy always facilitates a time of sharing for those involved. She asks, “So what did you learn for the first time? What did you hear God saying to you? What touched your heart?”
Here is what one person said after checking the Gospel of Mark: “The passage that really touched my heart was when Jesus was crucified. When these verses were read so passionately in my language, I imagined I was right there.”
At that point he started to cry and couldn’t talk for a while. When he could talk again he continued, “Sometimes we sin over and over again. My mother has said to me, ‘If we continually sin all the time, what was Jesus Christ’s suffering for? We make it as if Christ’s great suffering was for nothing.’”
God’s Word is living and active! It truly is sharper than any double-edged sword, and it penetrates our hearts—just like it did for these local speakers when they read the Gospel of Mark in their language.
Points to Ponder:
- Have you ever attended a church service or tried to read the Bible in a language that isn’t your first language? How did you feel?
- Think of a time when God’s Word spoke to you in a new way. What did God reveal about himself to you through his Word?
