The Principal's Perspective
November 11-15
Having Their Say!
This past week was one that came with a lot of emotions; for some there were emotions of happiness, and joy and for others there were emotions of sadness, anger, and dismay. I spent time, as I usually do, speaking to students at lunch throughout the week, to do a "temperature check." I wanted to make sure that they were feeling optimistic, hopeful, and most importantly, safe! One thing that I can say for certain is that our scholars are determined to change the world! I shared with them that adulthood, for them, is not so far away, and if they do not like the world as they know it, that they needed to remember these brief moments in life and harness it for good. They are so connected to seeing each other's humanity; they find it important that everyone has a sense that they matter and that they belong. I reminded them that they will always have a voice and that their voice must count for something positive. I encourage continued conversations with your scholars about the importance of their voice, and to use it for the benefit of their community, city, state, and world. I truly do believe, as Whitney Houston once sang, the children are our future, teach them well and let them lead the way! We have future leaders amongst us and I believe in each and every one of them!
Happy Veteran's Day
I would like to celebrate all of our Veterans today who make up the Nichols community, staff and caregivers alike. Your service is so very much appreciated! This country owes you everything for your service- thank you for all that you do and for what you have sacrificed to keep us all safe from enemies both foreign and domestic.
Half-Day
This Wednesday we are having a half-day. It is very important that students are in attendance. Students will attend their odd numbered classes to ensure enough minutes in a period to provide for ample quality instruction and engagement. Additionally, students will be doing some very special activities designed to foster belongingness and understanding of self. Thank you for making sure that your scholar is in attendance. Also, if you are looking for something for your child to do after school, please check the Evanston Public Library Website as there are half day activities happening for teens!

Cold Weather Notice
As cold weather approaches please remember the following:
- At this point all students must remember to take home their devices in the event of an e-learning day.
- Students may not enter the building until 7:40 (if they are going to breakfast) and 7:50 for regular entrance. Please plan accordingly so that your children are not outside for long periods of time.
- In cold weather (50 degrees and below) children should be wearing more than shorts and a t-shirt. Please check your children before they leave for school. I see FAR TOO MANY children walking to school shivering cold because they are not dressed appropriately for the weather. At the very least they should have on a sweatshirt and pants. As it gets colder, a winter coat as well. If you need winter clothes, we can provide that to you. Please contact the nurse if your are in need.
- All children are required to go outside for recess, even if there is snow on the ground. Please plan ahead for snow boats and appropriate winter footwear, hats, gloves. and scarves.

Theater Club
The Technical Theater Club offers hands-on experience in the behind-the-scenes magic of stage production. Members develop practical skills in sound engineering, lighting design, set construction, and stage/costume/prop management. Our club plays a crucial role in bringing school events to life, including the Black History Program, Women's History Month celebrations, and town hall meetings. Through workshops, projects, and real-world application, students learn to use the equipment and software. Whether you're interested in pursuing theater technology as a career or simply enjoy the creative and technical aspects of production, this club provides valuable experience in teamwork, problem-solving, and creative expression. Join us to discover the art and science behind successful stage productions while contributing to our school's vibrant performance culture. The club begins Nov. 12th and continues every Tuesday until Feb 4th. Club members are encouraged to work on the spring
Black SonRISE
Greetings Fellow Parents and Caregivers,
This past week was of reflection and preparation for our Risers. We were honored to welcome Ms. Brigitte Evans and Ms. Tawana Stiff to our session, two of D65's most respected educators.
Reflection came in the form of sharing our emotions and thoughts about the election. Risers asked telling questions about standards and expectations that we have for our candidates. They heard perspectives from the dads and the teachers about the urgency of the moment. Our community is looking to Risers as leaders of tomorrow, and we need them to be well educated.
With Veterans Day approaching, reflection also came in the form of an appreciation for people such as BSR dad and Army veteran Mr. Jimi Hickman. The Risers learned that the first American to die for their country in battle was a Black man, Crispus Attucks, in the opening skirmish of the Revolutionary War.
After four more Risers successfully recited the BSR creed, we transitioned to powerful presentations from Ms. Evans and Ms. Stiff. They shared strategies to combat test anxiety through preparation and perform better on the upcoming MAP test.
Our final session of the fall is next Saturday, and we are inviting all Riser moms to join us as Black SonRISE recognizes women in leadership!
