Mental Health Minute
🧠Did You Know...?🧠October is National Depression/Mental Health Screening Month. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 1 in 3 adolescents are diagnosed with an anxiety disorder in their lifetime. This number remains constant for adults (31.1%), indicating the pervasiveness and impact anxiety has on all of our lives. Globally, anxiety disorders are the most commonly diagnosed mental health disorders.
As students prepare to take the PSAT, complete midterm exams, and buckle down for the second half of the semester, make it a point to discuss anxiety management efforts and practice skills to support mental wellness. Below are four strategies you may wish to integrate into your family's routines:
- Set aside time on a weekly or biweekly basis for a family meeting. These meetings serve as a space for all family members to air grievances, discuss moments of success, offer support/validation, and engage in problem-solving. Allow these moments to focus on connection and reflection rather than consequences and reprimands. Mix in a game or a fun family dinner to sweeten the deal!
- Create a wellness routine. Take time in your week (even a few minutes will suffice) to practice self-care. What can you do for self-care? Go for a walk. Practice mindfulness. Spend time with a friend or call a family member for a chat. Eat a well-balanced meal. Spend time observing/practicing your beliefs. Visit a park. Play a game.
- Make and work toward SMART goals. SMART goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-Bound. Goals that adhere to these guidelines help to focus your time, track your progress, and actually complete what you set out to achieve. For anxious minds, SMART goals help to break down broad plans ("I will pass all my classes") into bite-sized pieces ("I will study for my math class for 30 minutes every day for the next month").
- Identify and connect with a support system. Knowing who you can turn to in moments of distress helps to alleviate some of the discomfort of difficult moments and increases your likelihood of accessing care. A support system is a network of reliable people, professional services, and community resources which provide emotional and practical support. Common members of a support system include family members, friends, neighbors, coaches/mentors, religious/spiritual advisors, support groups, and medical/mental health professionals.
