Info and thoughts for Class of 2022

SBHS CounselingNewsletterInfo and thoughts for Class of 2022

This is not what we planned for, so now what.....

As we head into April break, I have heard from many of you who are asking "what will I do over break with no school work?" You've watched all of Netflix, cleaned your room for the first time in three years, baked a few dozen cookies, watched too many hours of Tik Tok videos, walked, run, exercised, so now what? Well first, keep doing some of those things, but unplug from school, maybe try something new we've included here and spend some time considering what comes next. To that end, we have put together a variety of info and resources in one place so spend some time here and come back as needed. You are worth it.

Virtually Possible, Locking Down the College Search in a Global Pandemic

There is a lot of information out there for students and families who suddenly find themselves trying to figure out how to search for colleges from home. As sophomores, it is not too early to start college exploration and this mandatory "at home" time might provide just the opportunity you need to get a jump start.

This article is written by one of my go-to admissions professionals and I feel like it is the most comprehensive I have found.

Summer Dual Enrollment

We have received a number of questions from sophomores interested in taking a summer dual enrollment class.

Vermont public high school juniors and seniors are eligible to access two college courses with tuition fully reimbursed through a voucher system. Because this program is limited to juniors and seniors, current sophomores can only take courses that begin on or after June 15, 2020.

Sophomores who are interested in taking a summer course should check out offerings at UVM, CCV, St. Michael's College,

At this point, all three colleges are offering their summer courses fully online.

Dual Enrollment Voucher and course registration is a multi-step process

1. Students must apply for a Dual Enrollment account here

2. SBHS approves the account and students receive an email (to their SB email address) with account verification steps.

3. Students log in to their account and request a voucher for a specific course and section

4. SBHS approves voucher requests and students receive an email with the approved voucher number.

5. Students then "register for the course" at the specific college, using the voucher number.

NCAA Eligibility in response to COVID-19/ Remote Learning

Student-Athletes who are interested in playing Division I or II sports in college may be wondering how remote learning and changes to SBHS grading policy might impact their NCAA eligibility. The NCAA response updates can be found here and counselors and students are being reassured that the NCAA is working to respond with eligibility changes coming soon.

VSAC offering

Through a partnership with UVM Extension, VSAC is inviting high school students thinking about life after graduation to join Vermont 4-H and VSAC Outreach Counselor Lindsay Carpenter for one or all three online sessions of QuaranTeen Time - Getting College & Career Ready on April 7, 14 and 21 @ 3 p.m. to discuss how to get college & career ready.

Lindsay will provide tips and tricks, and answer questions related to college, affordability, and alternative pathways to careers. Find out how to sign up for these and other online events (including Virtual Science Cafes and Distance Learning Socials) so you can join in. Also check out the VSAC Facebook page for additional upcoming virtual events.
