Enrollment Impact Committee

What is the Enrollment Impact Committee?
Like other school districts across the region, state, and many communities throughout the country, Alhambra Unified School District has experienced a steady decline in student enrollment over the past few decades. We are looking ahead at the changing educational landscape and inviting families, staff, students, and community members to help shape what comes next.
Declining enrollment can have significant implications for school districts, affecting finances, staffing, programs, facilities, and school operations. Changes to enrollment can be challenging, but they also provide an opportunity to thoughtfully consider the future of the district and how it can continue providing strong educational experiences for students.
In January 2026, AUSD invited our educational partners to form an ENROLLMENT IMPACT COMMITTEE (EIC) to study this important issue. Over 50 parents, staff, and community members answered the call! Over the past seven months, EIC has examined enrollment trends, demographic data, and factors affecting student enrollment. It also has compared AUSD’s experience with neighboring school districts in the San Gabriel Valley, throughout Los Angeles County, and across California.
The data helps us understand where enrollment has been and where it may be headed, but the numbers only tell part of the story. Understanding what students, families, staff, and the broader community value most is an equally important part of planning for the future.
That is why AUSD is now inviting all our educational partners to become part of the conversation. In the coming weeks, AUSD will host a series of Community Conversations throughout the district. These sessions will provide opportunities for community members to learn more about EIC’s work, ask questions, share ideas, and discuss what they value most about AUSD. These meetings are open to staff members and/or parents of any grade TK-12 student. We will also hold separate meetings with student groups.
We are also asking you to complete a community survey, which is open now. We encourage you to respond to the survey now, attend a Community Conversation session, and then update your responses afterwards (by logging in with the same email address) as you learn more.
In the introductory district video below, Superintendent Dr. Denise R. Jaramillo and Student Board Member Angelina Yip share a brief history about AUSD to help explain why we are launching this districtwide effort to gather input and ideas from as many voices as possible. Each elementary principal will also be sharing individual site videos with site-specific information. To help keep you informed throughout this process, we have also created this EIC-specific newsletter and a dedicated page on the AUSD website (www.ausd.us/eic).
No decisions have been made about any changes to our schools, programs, or facilities. Right now, AUSD is gathering information, listening to our educational partners, and seeking to understand what our community values most. That is why it is so important that everyone participates by learning more, attending a Community Conversation, completing the survey, and sharing their perspectives.
We encourage everyone to take an active role in reimagining AUSD and considering what the future of the district can look like. By bringing together the perspectives of students, families, staff, and community members, AUSD hopes to build a shared vision for the next chapter of the district.
