Message from Walker Administration
Dearest Walker Families,
It was such a joy to see our hallways buzzing with energy during this week's Open House! Thank you to everyone who took the time to visit, chat with teachers, and celebrate our students' hard work.
A special shout-out to everyone who supported the Art Show. Our young artists were so proud to showcase their creativity, and your presence made the gallery truly come to life. Seeing the community rally around the arts is what makes our school so special!
We are excited about our upcoming Kinder Round Up and the PTA Spring Fling Carnival! Additionally, we will be celebrating Mrs. Young for Assistant Principal Week and dressing in the themed colors for PACK week (flyer below). It is going to be another great week at Walker!
Looking Ahead: STAAR Assessments
As we transition into next week, we are entering the STAAR Assessment window. We want to ensure our students feel confident, calm, and ready to show what they know.
The State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR®) is a standardized academic achievement test designed to measure the extent to which a student has learned and is able to apply the defined knowledge and skills in the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) at each tested grade, subject, and course. Every STAAR question is directly aligned to the TEKS currently in effect for the grade and subject or course being assessed.
STAAR is an online assessment in mathematics, reading language arts (RLA), science, and social studies for students in grades 3–8 and high school.

Reading STAAR (3rd, 4th, and 5th grades)
Encourage your child to eat a healthy breakfast or eat breakfast at school.
Encourage your child to get plenty of rest by going to bed early.
Please arrive at school on time (no later than 7:50) so students do not feel rushed in the morning.
To keep distractions at a minimum and to follow STAAR protocol: no gum, mints, or candy; no toys, fidgets, or stuffed animals; no blankets
Please ensure your child knows the plan for lunch – send a lunch with your child in the morning or they may buy lunch at school.
Please do not schedule any outside appointments on testing days.
Remind your child that cell phones/electronic devices/smart watches are not permitted in testing rooms. Any electronic devices that are brought to school will be taken up prior to testing and will be returned at the end of the school day.
Send a water bottle and a healthy, test-friendly snack to school (nothing gooey, sticky, or messy - dry and quiet is best). Place the snack in a baggie to help eliminate noisy wrappers during the test.
Bring a jacket or sweater since the classrooms can get chilly.

April 8 -Orange– Cantaloupe, Oranges, Baby Carrots, Sweet potato fries

Attendance Matters!
Studies show that excessive absences can negatively impact a child's education, including the loss of teacher-led lessons, peer interactions, and academic achievement. While we do not want our students to attend school if they are sick, please help us make punctuality and daily attendance a priority for your Star/s regarding all other circumstances. Should you need to keep your child home for any reason, please click the button below to report an absence.
MISD School Safety
MISD School Safety
A critical ingredient in the safe school recipe is the uniform classroom response to any incident. Weather events, fires, accidents, intruders and other threats to student safety are scenarios that are planned and trained for by all McKinney ISD schools and District Administration and staff. Historically, schools have taken this scenario-based approach to respond to hazards and threats. Each McKinney ISD classroom is furnished with the Standard Response Protocol poster that provides teachers with readily accessible response procedures and provides information during a crisis event. The attached handout explains Standard Response Protocol that is taught to students, faculty and staff.

What does it mean to be a member of Walker PTA? It simply means you can vote at PTA meetings & the money you spend to join goes towards our campus. It does not put you on a volunteer list or require you to volunteer (although we do appreciate our volunteers!).
NOTE: A free Membership Toolkit account is required, & if you already have one, it will need to be updated for this school year before you proceed.
Congratulations to the slated officers for 2026-2027 Walker Elementary PTA.
We still have a need for VP of Fundraising. You will have support in this role. Please let any PTA member know if you are interested.
Thank you to all who served on the Nominating Committee.

As a service to McKinney ISD students and families, the district provides the Community Folder for school related, non-school related, and non-profit organizations. Electronic communication has become standard and is preferred by many parents; the schools are sharing more and more information via email as a convenience to parents. This also cuts back on paper coming home in folders. Information posted and accepted must be youth-oriented and will be reviewed and approved by the Communications Department. Updates will be posted often, so we ask that you check back for the latest opportunities and information from our community.

Visitors & Volunteers
A valid state or government issued photo ID must be presented each time you visit, volunteer, or pick up a student. Please be prepared with your ID upon arrival. Photos of ID will not be accepted.
A background check is required each school year for people wanting to volunteer in McKinney ISD. This includes making copies, lunch duty coverage, classroom parties, field trips, and any other volunteering that takes place in our building or on our campus. We encourage you to complete your volunteer application as soon as possible to avoid any delay in the processing.
