Mr. Covert's Musings

Next month, on October 21st, our 10th grade students (and 11th grade students who opt-in) will be taking the PSAT. The PSAT is a great opportunity for students to prepare for the SAT. Additionally, the PSAT in 11th grade can be used as the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying test.

If you are a parent of a student taking the PSAT in October, encourage them to start preparing now. Research shows that students who prepare for the PSAT and take practice tests feel more comfortable taking the exam and in turn often score higher. The Khan Academy offers free PSAT and SAT test prep resources, and I encourage your student to take advantage of them. Even a few minutes of prep a day can make a big difference.

If you are the parent of a 9th grader, it's never too early to start prepping for the PSAT next year. Your student can use the same Khan Academy resources, and track their growth from 9th-12th grade. 12th grade parents, your student can use Khan Academy to help prep for the SAT.

One more thing to note, the Khan Academy also has other resources for Math, Science, Social Studies, English, and more! They have great resources that can help your students in their classes here at HHS.

Newest Members of the Herd

Last week, we welcomed two of the newest members of the Hereford Herd: Peggy & Jolene. They are mini Hereford cows that are "on loan" for the school year. A big thank you goes out to Noisy Acres Farm for sharing Peggy and Jolene with us! They will provide many learning opportunities for our students.

BCPS & Baltimore County PD Partnership

BCPS has partnered with the Baltimore County Police Department to offer high school students an internship opportunity for the first time this school year. The internship allows students to gain first-hand knowledge of the workings within the Police department. Students will spend 6 months with the Police Department, rotating through 3 different divisions, and participating in other opportunities that have been prepared for them. In this photo, 6 of the 9 BCPS students are receiving instruction from Sgt. Henry during their orientation. A shout out to Tesse Roese, pictured far left, representing HHS as a senior intern in this program.

Lax Serving In The Community

A big shoutout goes to several members of our boy's lacrosse program for their work in the community this past weekend! They participated in 2026 Baltimore Shootout for Soldiers at USA Lacrosse headquarters. As part of the event, they assisted with the Parkville Adaptive Lacrosse Team, and helped raise almost $3,000 in funds to support local veteran causes. They represented our school and community well! Below are two photos from the event.
