The Wall Township Wellness Team is proud to share Wellness in the Works, a quarterly newsletter designed to enrich and educate our school community on topics that promote health and overall well-being. Each volume highlights the "WHY" behind the work we do as a district wellness team—connecting our initiatives, programs, and partnerships to the broader goal of supporting the whole child, every day.

Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow: EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE! Attend Today, Achieve Tomorrow: EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE!

THE WHY... DOES REGULAR ATTENDANCE MATTER?

Regular school attendance helps students grow academically, socially, and emotionally—building confidence, strengthening friendships, and opening up a world where EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE! When students attend consistently, they build habits that lead to achievement, connection, and lifelong growth. Research consistently shows that attendance is one of the strongest predictors of future success:

  • According to the U.S. Department of Education, students who attend school regularly are more likely to read proficiently by third grade, graduate from high school, and pursue higher education.

  • The American Psychological Association notes that consistent attendance improves social-emotional skills like self-regulation, confidence, and resilience—critical traits for long-term well-being.

  • Chronic absenteeism, defined as missing 10% or more of the school year, is linked to lower academic performance and reduced sense of belonging (Attendance Works, 2023).

In short—YES regular school attendance matters because it builds the foundation for lifelong success.

A CLOSER LOOK OF THE BENEFITS OF REGULAR ATTENDANCE

Showing up every day reflects the 100% ACCOUNTABLE mindset—it means taking ownership of our actions, our goals, and our growth. It also reflects WE ARE CONNECTED—because when students are present, they strengthen their bonds with peers, teachers, and their community.

Every morning a student walks through our doors, they take a step toward possibility. Regular attendance helps students not only learn what they need to know, but become who they are meant to be. EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE!

FAMILY SUPPORT TO BUILD POSITIVE ATTENDANCE HABITS

As fall settles in—with cooler mornings, shorter days, and busy family schedules—it’s important to stay consistent and 100% ACCOUNTABLE when it comes to school attendance.

Here are a few simple ways families can help children show up and shine every day:

  • Create a Morning Routine: Establish regular wake-up and bedtime schedules to make mornings calm and predictable.

  • Plan Ahead: Lay out clothes, pack lunches, and organize backpacks the night before to avoid the morning rush.

  • Stay Healthy: Encourage handwashing, balanced meals, and plenty of sleep to keep immune systems strong as cold season begins.

  • Communicate Early: If your child faces challenges getting to school, reach out to their teacher, counselor, or nurse for support—we are here to help.

  • Celebrate Consistency: Acknowledge your child’s efforts to attend each day; small celebrations build motivation and pride.

When families and schools partner together, students thrive. By showing up, staying connected, and caring for one another, we strengthen our Wall community—and remind every child that EVERYTHING IS POSSIBLE!

THE TIME IS NOW: Taking Proactive Steps for a Healthy School Community

At Wall Township Public Schools, THE TIME IS NOW to take thoughtful, proactive steps to support students’ physical health in every part of their school experience. From classrooms to hallways, we are working to keep students safe, healthy, and ready to learn. Classroom Care Kits help teachers handle small needs quickly, clear guidelines ensure students visit the nurse when needed, and the Genesis Parent Portal now offers families of students in grades 6–12 an easy way to view nurse visit information. Along with healthy routines outlined in 7 Ways to Boost Your Wellness This Fall, these small, caring measures help create a learning environment where students can thrive all season long.

Music, Motivation, And Movement: POSTURING PASSION FIRST Music, Motivation, And Movement: POSTURING PASSION FIRST

PASSION FIRST PLAYLISTS: Motivation to Get Moving

Music is a powerful way to express who we are and what inspires us. Its rhythm and energy spark joy, focus, and motivation. A universal language, music reminds us that passion lives in every step, stretch, and song. Whether it is a warm-up tune or a team’s practice beat, music fuels motivation and movement, inspiring both body and heart.

Research from the American College of Sports Medicine, Harvard Health, and the American Psychological Association shows that combining music and movement boosts endurance, coordination, and mood by releasing dopamine and reducing stress. For children, rhythm-based activities strengthen brain development and emotional regulation, while for teens, the right playlist enhances motivation and well-being.

When music and movement unite, students experience joy, focus, and a deeper mind-body connection. Through the PASSION FIRST mindset, we encourage students to discover what moves them—literally and figuratively. Turn up the volume, find your rhythm, and let your passion lead the way!

Elementary Music and Movement

  • Improv Dance: Let children create their own moves in response to different types of music.
  • Musical Statues: Play music while children dance, and have them freeze like a statue when the music stops.
  • Body Percussion: Use clapping, stomping, and other body movements to create rhythms.
  • Obstacle Course: Create a course where movements are dictated by a musical cue, like "jump when you hear the high note" or "run fast when the beat is fast".

Teen Music and Movement

  • Create a “Mood-Boost” Playlist: Choose upbeat songs that make you want to move. Try pop, dance, or clean hip-hop beats that bring out your energy and confidence.
  • Movement Study Breaks: Between assignments, take a 3-minute stretch or mini dance break.
  • Team Beats: Ask teammates to pick a “pump-up” song before practices or games. Shared playlists build community and motivation.
  • Mindful Cool-Down: End your playlist with calm, instrumental tracks to stretch and breathe.

STEM and Wellness: WE ARE CONNECTED

Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (better known as STEM) activities promote learning, creativity, and engagement—and are even more powerful when shared as a family. When families participate in STEM-related activities together, they not only spark curiosity and deepen intellectual growth but also strengthen emotional and social bonds.

Through hands-on exploration, problem-solving, and teamwork, families experience the joy of discovery while building important life skills such as communication, perseverance, and collaboration. Most importantly, these shared experiences remind us that WE ARE CONNECTED—to each other, to our community, and to the world around us.

Below are some fun and simple STEM activities your family can try together to learn, create, and connect!
