May 2025 Community Newsletter
Message from the Superintendent
Welcome to the May/June/July McFarland School Community Newsletter!
Thank you for taking the time to read this newsletter which includes information about important events, community activities, key projects, the incredible achievements of our students and staff, and updates on how we’re addressing challenges and planning for the future.
Some highlights for the past few months include:
The end of the year is very busy with exciting performances, postseason athletic competitions, culminating student projects, senior exit interviews, the senior parade, and, of course, graduation. It is a great time to be a spartan!
We continue to focus on being fiscally responsible by cutting costs and increasing revenues whenever possible. We were able to negotiate a positive health insurance agreement with significant cost savings above estimates, reduce energy consumption, receive grants, and much more! We are also advocating with our legislators for school funding needs as they develop the biennial budget
The board decided to rename Conrad Elvehjem Primary School to a previous name, McFarland Primary School.
We are hiring! We have several open positions for the next school year. If you or someone you know might be interested please click here.
We are always looking for more substitute teachers and assistants as we get ready for the 2025-26 school year. Please click here for more information!
Tours: We are happy to give school tours for groups of interested people, especially for class reunions. If you are interested in a tour, please email me at tarnuta@mcfsd.org.
As a reminder, should you have any questions, ideas, or concerns please use this form or reach out to me personally. Your voice matters, and we are committed to open, transparent, and frequent communication with our community.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our schools—we couldn’t do this without you!
Stay Classy McFarland !

Land Acknowledgment Plaque Fundraiser
On May 3, 2023, the Village of McFarland Board of Trustees, in collaboration with the McFarland School Board, adopted a Land Acknowledgement recognizing the ancestral and sacred Ho-Chunk land of the Four Lakes Region, known to the Ho-Chunk people as Teejop (day-JOPE) since time immemorial. This step honors the deep and ongoing connection the Ho-Chunk people have with this land. The McFarland School District, in partnership with the Indigenous Solidarity Collective of McFarland, is asking for your support to place a plaque featuring this Land Acknowledgement at each school in the district. The estimated cost for all four plaques is $7272. These plaques will be 24 x 24 inches, engraved and meant to last decades. We are seeking your support to fund the creation and placement of these plaques. Any and all donations are appreciated and will contribute to this lasting reminder of the Ho-Chunk Nation's history and culture, fostering respect, learning, and reconciliation within our community. Click HERE or on the photo below if you are interested in donating. If you prefer to write a check, you can submit the check to the McFarland School District and drop it off at McFarland High School for the District Office.

McFarland Eco Club Wins the Renew Our Schools Energy Conservation Competition....Again!
The McFarland High School Eco Club has clinched the top prize in the 2025 Spring Renew Our Schools Energy Conservation Challenge, marking their third consecutive victory in the statewide competition. The challenge, a collaborative initiative by the Wisconsin K-12 Energy Education Program (KEEP) and FOCUS ON ENERGY, aims to empower students to understand and actively reduce energy consumption in their schools and communities.
Over a dynamic five-week competition held throughout March and April, McFarland High School stood out among 13 participating schools, including five returning alumni schools. Through a combination of dedication, innovation, and teamwork, the Eco Club completed 32 energy-saving actions, earned 561 points, and successfully reduced school energy usage by 7%, equating to nearly $850 in savings during the challenge period.
“This challenge is all about empowering our young people to take the lead in creating a more sustainable future,” said Heather Feigum from Focus on Energy, who presented the award. “McFarland High School didn’t just participate – they excelled! The team demonstrated incredible dedication, creativity, and a deep commitment to energy conservation.”
Feigum also praised specific initiatives led by the club, including:
Weekly energy data analysis and school-wide announcements.
An energy audit of the 2nd and 3rd floor hallways, which identified areas of excessive lighting and opportunities to utilize natural light or install sensors.
An “Energy Savings Day” on March 14, where efforts to turn off unnecessary lights and electronics reduced energy usage by 4.3% in a single day.
Classroom audits and personalized feedback to teachers on ways to reduce energy waste.
A weekend energy reduction of over 10%, showcasing their influence on long-term behavioral change.
The club attributes their continued success to lessons learned in previous years, noting that the school’s baseline energy consumption is now lower than before due to lasting behavioral and infrastructural changes from previous years.
As a result of their outstanding performance, McFarland High School received a $2,150 check — $2,000 for winning the competition and an additional $150 for their Energy Savings Day mini-challenge.
This continued success demonstrates the power of youth-led initiatives in promoting sustainability and cutting costs for schools and taxpayers alike. Congratulations to the McFarland Eco Club for leading the charge toward a greener future!
Author Visit!
Sixth graders at Indian Mound Middle School were treated to a visit from children’s book author Laura Bird, writer of Crossing the Pressure Line and Marvelous Jackson—two stories filled with imagination, adventure, and heart.
Laura shared what it’s like to be an author, where her ideas come from, and how she brings unforgettable characters and meaningful themes like friendship, courage, and self-discovery to life. Her storytelling truly inspired the next generation of #McFarlandStrong writers in our classroom! THANK YOU so much!!
McFarland Vocal Showcase!
McFarland A Cappella groups wowed audiences at the McFarland Vocal Showcase here at our PAC!
The BlueNotes, Kittens Mittens, and Pitch Please shared full sets of fun and contemporary tunes, then later with 10 other Dane County groups, they performed at the Mad City A Cappella Summit in Oregon.
