NHS Raider Update
November 22 2024
No School, Thanksgiving Break- Nov. 28 & 29
Due to the Thanksgiving holiday, the next Raider Update is scheduled for Friday, December 6th. It is a great day to be a Raider!
e-Learning Day- Wednesday, November 27th
While we don't want to think about it quite yet, winter will arrive in Minnesota in the near future. While last year's winter was mild and caused no school cancellations, Minnesota winter weather has been known to disrupt our schedule. Some key items:
- November 27th is a practice e-learning day- Attendance check in required via Zoom Link in Schoology shared by 2nd period teacher.
To refamiliarize families, students, teachers, and staff with e-Learning day procedures without the pressure associated with early morning decisions.
To ensure families, students, teachers, and staff understand the sites they will need to use and have appropriate passwords readily available.
As with all e-Learning days, if you prefer your student not participate in the practice e-Learning Day, you may call them in as absent and it will count as excused.
We will follow our regular e-Learning procedures on Nov. 27.The district uses e-Learning days for the second and subsequent full-day closures. You can learn more about what goes into decisions to close school, start late, or dismiss early here.
The first full-day closure due to weather is a true "snow day."

Principal Update:
Dear NHS Students, Families and Staff:
NHS has been working hard to develop systems in support of all students. The data for quarter one is encouraging. I cannot help but wonder what role all each of the systems and how teachers and students are using them, has played into helping students find success. Teachers have shared that they see a more focused environment and an increase in assignments completed on time. The data seems to support that conclusion as well. Additionally our staff has been studying the role of rigor in the day to day learning experience. It is our goal to have our stakeholders have high confidence that grades reflect the learning. We've studied how grades serve as a predictor for ACT exam success and readiness for college and career. Our Advanced Placement Participation continues grow as well. We've had more students sign up to take exams than ever before. This is excellent evidence that supports eagerness of students to be challenged in their quest to be college and career ready. We plan to share additional data at our next Parents as Partners (Click Here to RSVP) meeting on December 9th. Below, you will find data visualizations to provide a quick preview.
See the graphics below:
1. Graph 1: Percent of students with one or more D(s) and F(s) from first quarter.
2. Graphic 2: Attendance goal and percent of students regularly attending.
3. Graph 3: Chronically absent student performance compared to those regularly attending.
4. Graph 4: Impact of cell phone policy on student productivity.
5. Graph 5: How do parents feel about the implementation of the cell phone policy?
One of the systems improvement efforts is the cellphone/device plan. We had 226 respondents to the parent/caregiver cellphone/device survey. Additionally, we had students take a survey after the first nine weeks of implementation. We will continue to learn from students, staff and families about how the implementation plan is going and make the appropriate adjustments.
The Cellphone/Device Plan goal is to take a more comprehensive approach to developing an electronic device (ex. cell phones, earbuds, etc…) procedure, supported by policy, in order to create a more focused learning environment, while addressing the legitimate needs of stakeholders. Our "why" and specific plan, shared in early this fall and linked here, includes four main focus areas.
- Improve Academic Performance
- Enhance Mental Health
- Create a Better Classroom Environment
- Support Effective Teaching
Additional data will be shared from the recent student survey after our Advanced Placement Psychology Class finishes summarizing the data.
Another systems revision took place to better support academic needs through FLEX time. One of the goals of FLEX is to provide time in each student's day to connect with teachers, do homework and get extra academic support. Super FLEX can be a drop in or an assigned intervention (see levels of support below). I encourage parents to check in with your child about how they are using FLEX time.
Thank you for your continued support and confidence in the NHS team's capacity to serve in the honorable role as educators in your child's life.
Sincerely,
Shane Baier
NHS Principal

Operation Joy Season!
It's Operation Joy season. For those of you new to Northfield, this is a holiday gift giving community tradition for over 50 years. Last year we supported over 1000 children from over 500 families in the Northfield community. The event this year will be Wednesday, December 11.
In the past few years many of you have also supported the program through
- staff adopting a family
- students raising funds
- collecting wrapping paper supplies - this is a HUGE help
- making fleece-tied blankets
All of it is very much appreciated. Reach out to confirm if you will be participating in any of these additional supports.
Registration has already begun.
Both registration and monetary donations are appreciated by Friday, November 15.
Fleece-tied blankets and wrapping paper supplies should be dropped off on Tuesday, December 10.
We will have posters ready next week if you are interested in hanging any up around your school.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
Thanks for your support of this long shared community tradition.
