Notes from the Counseling Office for 8th Grade Parents/Guardians Notes from the Counseling Office for 8th Grade Parents/Guardians

You will start to hear your child talk about the Individual Career Academic Planning (ICAP) which they will complete this spring semester. The ICAP is a plan of study to guide students through the coursework and activities for achieving personal career goals, post-secondary planning and providing individual pathway options. The ICAP is a roadmap for students to know what classes they want to take each year of high school. This gives them a birds-eye-view of what they have to take to graduate and if students want to take a more rigorous academic course load or if they want to do a program at the Kirksville Area Technical Center. The ICAP may change throughout high school. An annual review and revision of a student’s plan is part of the ICAP process to ensure more thoughtful decision-making related to future goals.

PARENTS/FAMILY...

  • Collaborate with student to explore, prepare and plan for career and postsecondary options
  • Demonstrate active interest in and support of ICAP
  • With student, review and sign the completed ICAP

National Assessment of Educational Process National Assessment of Educational Process

Our school was chosen for a random group of 8th grade students to take the National Assessment of Educational Process (NAEP) test. This is the U.S.'s key measure of student achievement in subjects like math and reading, known as "The Nation's Report Card" providing data to improve education policy and practice for the nation, states and districts. It assesses representative samples of students using both paper and digital formats, with results released months later to show trends and contextualize learning experiences through questionnaires. If your 8th grade student has been randomly selected the counselors will notify you.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Essay Contest - Due 1/20/26 by 5 PM

Grades 6 - 8

Guided by the contest theme, students are invited to imagine that Dr. King could visit their school today and speak directly to them. In their essays, writers should describe the kind of guidance they believe he would offer about how to treat other people, make difficult choices, respond to unfairness, and contribute to a more peaceful community. Students may draw on experiences from their own lives, situations they have seen among friends or classmates, or issues they notice in the wider world. Essays should show how Dr. King's voice could still challenge, encourage, and inspire young people in 2026

Mrs. Stephens put together a curriculum for a 7th grade Core Lit class called Leadership Lab. We're reading The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens and we'll be exploring what leadership is, what it looks like, and how to develop the skills we have to be leaders in many different ways/areas of life. Thank you to the Rotary Club for awarding the grant to purchase the books!
