February 4, Volume 3, Issue 17
Dear OPMS Parents, Students, and Staff:
We hope you are had a wonderful weekend. Please take a moment to review the important events and time-sensitive information below.
Black History Month: February 2026
February is Black History Month, a time to reflect on the many contributions and achievements of Black Americans throughout history. It provides an opportunity to learn about individuals, innovations, and moments that have influenced our country in many ways. At Orchard Park Middle School, we value learning and curiosity. Black History Month serves as a reminder that history is made up of diverse stories and perspectives, all of which help us better understand the world around us. We encourage our students, staff, and families to take time this month to explore and reflect—whether by reading, listening, or learning more about the people and events that have shaped history. Learn more about the origins of Black History Month by clicking on this link.
National School Counseling Week: February 2 - 6
This week, we take the time to recognize and celebrate the incredible work of our school counselors, Mrs. Clark, Mrs. Lunduski, and Ms. Nobel. Their dedication, compassion, and commitment to the well-being of our students make a difference every single day at Orchard Park Middle School.
From guiding students through academic and social challenges to fostering a positive and inclusive school environment, our counselors are essential to student success. They provide support, encouragement, and the tools our students need to navigate middle school and beyond.
Thank you, Mrs. Clark, Mrs. Lunduski, and Ms. Nobel, for your unwavering dedication and the countless ways you support our students, staff, and families. We appreciate all that you do! #NSCW2026 #ThankYouSchoolCounselors
OPMS Student Behavior PSA
As we know, tiktok trends come and go, and the trend of paper darts has unfortunately made its way into the middle school. Paper darts are small objects made by folding or rolling paper into tight, pointed shapes. Students fling them upward so they stick into ceiling tiles or walls. While this may seem like a harmless prank, it can quickly turn into a bigger problem when the behavior damages school property or creates a mess around the building.
Recently, this issue has become more serious because some students have begun attaching thumbtacks or other sharp objects to the ends of the darts. That turns a nuisance behavior into a real safety concern. Most of these darts have been thrown into ceilings, particularly in the boys’ bathrooms. We have caught students engaging in this behavior, and appropriate consequences have been given.
We will be sharing a clear reminder with students about expectations and safety. Anything involving a thumbtack or sharp object is considered dangerous and will be treated accordingly. Please take a moment to talk with your child at home about making safe choices and understanding how actions like this can affect others. We appreciate your support as we work together to keep our school safe and respectful.
8th Grade Parents - OPHS Scheduling Night on 2/4/26
Families of current 8th grade students are asked to save the date for Orchard Park High School’s 8th Grade Scheduling Night. The event will take place on Wednesday, February 4 at 7:00 PM in the OPHS Auditorium. This evening will provide important information to support students as they plan for the transition to high school.
OPMS PTO Candy Gram Sale - Volunteers Needed
The OPMS PTO will be hosting a Valentine’s Day Candy Gram sale from February 5–12! Candy grams are a fun way for students to send a little kindness to friends and staff. We would love parent volunteers to help make this event a success. If you’re interested in helping out, please sign up using the link below.
Pajamas for Punt - February 6, 2026
Our annual Pajamas for PUNT fundraiser will take place next week on February 6. We are excited to celebrate 6th grader Elise Madden for her outstanding achievement in the Greater Western District Creative Writing Contest. Elise earned 2nd place in Category 3 (Grades 6–8) Short Story for her piece titled Just a Dream Away. Her creative storytelling and strong writing skills made her work stand out among many talented entries.
As part of this accomplishment, Elise received a certificate and a cash prize in recognition of her fabulous piece. This contest, sponsored by the Western New York Federation of Women’s Clubs, encourages students to share their voices through writing while fostering creativity and personal growth. Congratulations to Elise on this wonderful achievement. We are so proud of her hard work and talent.
OPMS Instructional Spotlight
Mrs. Staebell - Science 8
Students in Mrs. Staebell’s 8th grade science class recently put their engineering skills to the test by designing and building marble rollercoasters. Using pipe insulation and a variety of other materials, students applied their understanding of potential and kinetic energy to create tracks that would move a marble as quickly and smoothly as possible. Through hands-on experimentation and problem solving, they explored how height, speed, and design impact motion. It was an exciting and creative way to bring science concepts to life.
Miss Richey - Science 7
Students in Miss Richey’s 7th grade science class took part in an engaging tabletop simulation where they worked together in groups as city planning teams. Each group was responsible for managing its own city while collaborating to solve a variety of challenges. All of the problems focused on environmental impact, encouraging students to think critically about real-world issues and the decisions that affect communities. The lesson was created in collaboration with one of our fabulous librarians, Mr. Kloster, and provided a meaningful and creative way for students to apply science concepts through teamwork and problem solving.

A note to our families at Orchard Park Middle Schools:
The OPMS Observer is the weekly newsletter that is sent to families. You will receive a text link and an email each time a new issue is released. This is the best source of receiving updated information weekly from the school.
Attendance Matters
The Orchard Park Central School District is committed to partnering with parents and guardians to support strong student attendance, helping every child reach their full potential each day. We understand that absences can add up, often due to illness or other unexpected circumstances, and our goal is to work together with families to support students’ academic success.
To make the process easier, parents and guardians can now submit attendance notes and pick up information online. Simply log in to the Parent Portal, click on Attendance Notes, and complete and submit the form. Please view the video below for detailed instructions.
Student Drop Off and Pick Up
Here are some important reminders for our traffic patterns to help keep all of the OPMS community safe. We understand that the pick-up/drop-off traffic lines can be long, however, the safety of our students and staff is critical.
Drop off: Buses use the front loop on South Lincoln. Parent drop-off is not allowed in the front loop. Parent drop-off is behind the building, please enter the lot from 20A and follow the directions of the staff. Student drop-off is not allowed before 7:45 a.m. This is to prevent a potentially serious safety risk, as students aren’t permitted to go to homeroom before then, and there is limited supervision in the foyer.
Pick up: Parents should use the front loop for student pick up for early releases and normal dismissal at 2:35 p.m. The buses will use the lot behind the school for pick up.

Orchard Park is fortunate to have a strong partner in OPSEPTSA, the Orchard Park Special Education Parent Teacher Student Association. OPSEPTSA is a welcoming network of parents, family members, teachers, students, administrators, and community members who work together to support students with special needs and their families. Their mission is to advocate for the education and well-being of every child while helping families navigate services within the Orchard Park Central School District.
Through monthly informational meetings, OPSEPTSA provides valuable opportunities to connect with other families, hear from guest speakers and service providers, and learn more about topics such as CSE meetings, student rights under New York State Education Law, and resources available both in and outside of school. These meetings are a great way to ask questions, share experiences, and stay informed about upcoming events and supports in our community.
All families and community members are welcome to get involved. To learn more, become a member, or attend a meeting, you can follow OPSEPTSA on Facebook and Instagram or email opseptsa@gmail.com to sign up.
